Do you think that good looking people get a break?

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

hehe…I remember. I even found the pic.

:omg:

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

Yes in some occupations but not in all. I know for a fact that in my career line, you will not be able to even take two steps only with a pretty face..

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

I have seen average looking people developing magnetism and charm in their personalities by properly grooming themselves. Case in point is Angelina Jolie. She was a very ordinary looking girl in 80's. Even Oprah became a much attractive person in last few years. At the end, how good you look is based more upon a good self esteem than self centered shallowness.

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

correct me if I am wrong, but did you just call yourself ugly? :D

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

Here's an honest answer ...

Beauty (apparent) is one of the gifts of advantage that is given to some people. The fact that it is considered a gift is seen firstly by the sign of all prophets - they were beautiful and untarred.

We know that the most beautiful person in intensity was Sayyidina Yusuf (AS) - also we know that the most beautiful person in terms of all encomapssing balanced beauty was Sayyiduna Muhammad (SAW), his being so attractive that it brought coolness to the beholder, whereas the intense beauty of Yusuf (AS) shocked the people into forgetting their whereabouts ... Other forms of beauty are measured against that standard.

I think good looking people do get an advantage in opportunities in this world, just as better sounding people, taller than average people, just because in the absence of knowing what the person is really like - people resort to using their gut feelings - and nine times out of ten their gut is influenced by the impression they get - if beauty is there - it could be a jealous reaction or it could be a reaction of "familiarity" that they feel they have known that person.

I'm not good looking, I'm not tall, so I have to resort to being as kind as possible to get my advantage and when I was younger I needed to do a lot more physical exercise and be the best at sports to get my advantage ... I also feel smelling good helps too.

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

I agree about the exceptions...I've encountered them as well (attractive people who ARE down to earth and easy-going and considerate). And they are out there. But in my experience...there weren't too many of them...and this is among the girls. And yes, I have seen examples of less attractive people who have a chip on their shoulders and will bring others down to raise themselves up (as well as more positive examples). Just sharing my own experience.

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

I have come across examples of such people...(example: the overweight person putting a more in-shape person down for being "anorexic" etc)....and those around them who picked up on it had no sympathy and found their jealousy/brooding/complexes very off-putting. IMaybe we tend to think that just because we didn't experience something...it doesn't happen as much....or that if we have experienced something often enough...that it's a common occurence. I've been on the receiving end of it from some of my cousins and while it took me a while to understand that it was a reflection of their own insecurities....I did not find their behavior acceptable.

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

Just to clarify the studies do not look at a tradeoff between skills/abilities and looks..so its not a question of succeeding 'only' with a pretty face.
the stats indicate that ..all things being equal ..people considered to be more attractive do better than those considered avg or below avg

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

or unsuccessful? :konfused:

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

Aside from personal experiences if we look at studies conducted on the subject, I can recall the source but there is at least one study out there which basically showed empirically that in general the better looking people tend to have (and/or are seen as having) better and well balanced personalities as well. I will have to dig it up. the synopsis was that fewer hangups and more confidence then channels into a more balanced personality. Although, there are probably other studies that counter that as well but either way those would be broader than our limited set of experiences

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

i think in some instances... good looking could actually mean, well groomed.. people who take care in their appearance and make an effort , not going over the top as such..

i dunno? Generally, well groomed people, come across more confident.. and people hiring/interviewing do want to employ people who are presentable.. no?

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

I never used the word ugly anywhere in my sentence. I said 'only with a pretty face' which may imply I am both beautiful and smart, no?

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

It's not necessary that if a research study states a particular finding, it's a fact. You are presenting research findings, I am presenting you my experience (and so are some of the other posters). I am not sure if I have noticed at my workplace that superficial beauty makes any difference at all, that's all i am trying to say.

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

I am not doubting your experience, your experience is your experience, nothing can change that.

On this particular topic, for my own understanding of the impact, I choose to give more credence to not just one, but multiple major studies conducted by fairly esteemed institutions, regardless of anyone's personal observations and experiences.

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

Agree - they do get an advantage.

Recently i encountered something similar. Near my house was a huge exhibition of Indian jewelery. Since it was near my house & really not a place to go dressed up, i was wearing very simple clothes & spectacles and no makeup. Basically, a very ordinary at-home sort of look.

Anyway, a stall at the place had beautiful jewelery but was a total fish market. Finally i got to the first row and waited there for 20 minutes for the sales lady to tell me the price. I asked her some 30 times and she ignored & ignored & ignored. Meanwhile a girl (very pretty,Pakistani but Lebanese looking with fully blow dried hair and full makeup) called out “auntie, please would you tell me the price of those earrings?” – The same earrings i was asking about since 20 minutes. She was in the last row but aunty hurriedly told her the price and sold the earrings from that last row. OMG was i pissed or what!!! Just because she was good looking, aunty thought she would have bought the earrings. I could easily have made pieces of the hprrible woman, i was THAT pissed. I had been standing there for a long time and this woman who wasn’t even in line got away with the stuff, what horrible horrible customer service. :aj::mad3::mad2:

I bet he did.

Re: Do you think that good looking people get a break?

:k:

it really just varies and depends. i thin most professional people who put in a little effort tend to look quite good nowadays. and everyone defines beauty differently.
