Apparantly after a survey was conducted on cellphone use on young people, their reflexes were the same as a 70 year old person driving, even if they were using a hands free kit.
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
Cell phones only cause distraction while dialing or answering the call. It’s NOT a distraction while using it with a headset. How talking on the phone with a headset is different from talking with someone sitting in the car? Unless someone is a complete retard who can’t drive and talk (multitasking) at the same time I don’t see any reason for it to cause any distraction.
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
Its another example of Govt. extending itself into our lives. Just like they make us wear seat belts.....come on of course I answered no. Catty, you might want to add another option of Govt. has no right to dictate when and where I can use my cellphone.
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
^ if your killing people then i think the govt does have a right to dictate.
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
MM, I am not killing any one. I think it is a big jump in logic to state that cellphone use while driving contributes to death. More drives get into accident changing channels on their radio. These are incompetent people, if you think that you cannot handle it, dont do it. Do not try to dictate to me or other people who are completly capable of handling two tasks at once (multitasking).
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
Kaleem, when was i dictating? i was giving my opinion as were you, its not a real poll you know...cat-woman isnt going to pass a bill on using a mobile phone whilst driving!!
I can not speak for all drivers or as a driver, as i don't drive, but being a passanger whilst the driver of the car is busy yapping away on his stupid bluetooth link is not a very nice experience.
Some deaths are caused by people using thier mobile phone whilst driving, so it does contribute.
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
Why don't they ban eating burgers and fries in car as well?
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
when I am half a sleep driving on the interstate, a call on the cell phone is a lifesaver!
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
hey Kaleem I was just stating what I read in the paper the other day.
I guess one of the options should be 'depends if the car is manual or automatic', but I guess in the US (where most of you are) 99% of cars are auto.
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
^^ That is true, also, this is where you will see the most resistance to these rules as well...save liberal cities such as NY and San Fran.
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
even more distracting is getting..ahem.. head while driving..why isnt that banned?
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
i say using a handsfree set is ok as it does not require the person to take his hands off the wheel.. better to use handsfree with a cellphone that has voice commands activated in it.. it wont distract the driver.. and as rukhs said, it cud help in keeping the driver awake..
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
Current driving laws are generally vague and forbid distracted driving, so that includes distracted for any reason... eating, singing, sleeping, drinking, smoking, talking, dozing, applying make-up etc. Though you are only likely to get caught and fined if you do something really stupid like driving in a zig zag pattern or doing 15 mph on a 65 mph freeway.
Talking on the phone while not using hands-free is definitely impairing your motor skills, cz you only have one hand on the steering. This is not a problem if you are going in a straight line or making expected turns, but if something unexpected happens in front of you, availibility of one hand is likely to make you handicapped in dealing with the situation. This is definitely a common sense problem. This is different from changing radio stations, which is not likely to take as long as making a call from your cellphone. Risk is lower, plus many new model cars, have radio controls on the steering to ensure drivers don't take their hands off the steering for changing stations or volume.
The second issue is mental distraction. I agree with the one who said that talking on cellphone is as likely to make you distracted as talking with the person in the passenger seat. Your mind is elsewhere. Most drivers (atleast experienced drivers) use sub-concious senses to drive on known routes. We don't have to think to know that when the traffic signal is red, we should start applying brakes. With experience this is all controlled from sub-concious, and we pretty much do it automatically. Talking on the phone is not likely to impair that any more or less than talking to someone in the next seat or just thinking about any issue at work or home.
ps. By the way, severe distrust of government to the extent that one discards any and all government studies on the risks of distracted driving may be considered paranoia. ;)
pps. Last option on the poll is confusing. What is meant by "law covers everything"? It should say, "only if law forbids use of all handsfree devices as well".
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
then we also need to make laws banning talking with the person in the passenger seat to make everything idiot proof.
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
Ofcourse, you can suggest a law like that, though it will be pretty unproductive and inane, IMO. As I said in the last sentence of the paragraph you quoted “Talking on the phone is not likely to impair that any more or less than talking to someone in the next seat or just thinking about any issue at work or home.”
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
I agree, Dude I can hold phone, shift gears and sip coffee at the same time. I won't recommend this to any one though. Like someone said earlier it is best to use voice dial enabled handset with a good headset (bluetooth preferably) ;)

Faisal bhaijaan, so you want me to accpet the Governmental studies that are done to enhance their own cause? Where is the logic in that? What do you say we conduct a study showing that San Francisco is a mecca for gays? Do you think it will be hard to accumulate numbers supporting that claim?
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
Here in Austria it's the law already. You are not allowed to use your mobile while driving unless you have a hands free kit.
Re: Do you support a ban on cellphone use while driving?
^ same here, its a R500 ($80) spot fine if you're caught, but a lot of people still do it anyway and get off with bribing the cop with 5 bucks.
