Re: Do you respect those who don't respect you?
With family members and other loved ones it may not be mutual. But with everyone else it cannot work if its not mutual.
Re: Do you respect those who don't respect you?
it's mutual.
Re: Do you respect those who don't respect you?
I really believe respect has to be earned, I give people a basic level of respect when I first meet them then the respect either grows or declines after I get to know them. If someone does not respect me and I lose respect for them I just distance myself from them.

No.
Yes.
No.
Re: Do you respect those who don't respect you?
Mostly has to be mutual, except for when it comes to someone who is much, much older than me, but yeah with everyone else it has to be mutual, if someone doesn't respect me, or if I don't respect them, I just lose all contact with that person.
Re: Do you respect those who don't respect you?
If I respect someone, I respect them for what they are and not what they think I am.
Re: Do you respect those who don't respect you?
depends.. is it morning yet?
Re: Do you respect those who don't respect you?
its mutual.
Re: Do you respect those who don't respect you?
mutual
Re: Do you respect those who don't respect you?
I don't respect people for what they think or believe....of me or of anything else; primarily because I think that this is changeable.
I respect people for their actions and their conduct.
So whether or not they respect my ideas or beliefs is irrelevant.

Hmm...that's interesting!

I agree.
Respect is mutual for me. If someone's actions are totally out of order they lose all respect in my eyes (e.g some relatives of mine). However I may still have to put on an outward show of respect at gatherings due to the age factor.
Re: Do you respect those who don’t respect you?
It doesn’t bother me that much if someone doesn’t respect me, I treat them in a civil way until they mess up. I put up with a pretentious bunch (who clearly had no respect for others) for a long time until they stepped out of the line and insulted a family member for no particular reason. So I am more intolerant of even the slightest disrespectful behaviour aimed at my family and those people will get no tameez and izzat from me :faris:

No Never
Re: Do you respect those who don't respect you?
As mentioned in the Quran, Allah (swt) ordered Musa (a.s) to speak to Pharoah politely (with respect). The Prophet (saw) never disrespected Abu-Jahal, Abu-Lahab and Abdullah bin Ubai. There is a very long list of the amount of physical and mental pain they gave to the Prophet (saw) and his family for a long time...Ibn Ubai even targeted Hazrat Ayesha (r.a) with a false accusation of "Zina" (Adultery) but we all know the Prophet (saw) still didn't disrespect him and was even ready to offer his Janaza till Allah (swt) prohibited it.
What was the response of Hazrat Ali (r.a) towards the kafir who spit at his face during Jihad ?
Of course, the amount of respect increases with the closeness of a relationship (mother, father..etc.) and character / achievements / patience / sacrifices of a person in a good cause (Abdus Sattar Edi, Dr. Abdul Qadeer khan, Imran Khan...etc.), but even those who deserve punishment don't deserve disrespect. Allah (swt) loves those who respect even the sinful and criminal for the love of Allah (swt). It is *this respect *and love that Allah (swt) make a source of guidance for those sinful and criminal people...
Being a human, I am tempted for a revenge of a disrespect towards me, but at least my intentions should be to follow my ideal even in this aspect of life. It becomes possible when I ignore the faults and flaws of a person, but concentrate only on his good qualities / deeds even if they are very few compared to his bad qualities / deeds.
Re: Do you respect those who don't respect you?
Respect is earned not doled out like unemployment checks.
