In dealing with the douche-subspecies of humans I am polite to them and treat them as I would non-douches.
Respect is more than holding doors for others and saying please and thank-you, thee must show you deserve respect.

its more than that too......people respect those who have more money/power/status.....so that they can derive some benefit from those......

Hmm respects earned. I am not always respected by the people I respect, sometimes when thier my elders or superiors then I just nod along.
However depending on the nature of the dis-respect I am given by those of my level… then I have to teach them to at least respect :faris: if nothing else… and believe me they fear and respect.

there are some people that probably have no problem with being around someone that does not have mutual respect for them.
maybe it’s a flaw in me, but i need to have that mutual respect, the person needs to respect me and my loved ones, or else i can’t see that person in a good light. i am no mother theresa, if that person says insults to me or my family, maybe only martin luther king, could respect that or be around such a person

Anyone who has a favourite celebrity or who is a fan of some famous person is in the state of respecting them, whilst they are not respected back by them (probably because they are unknown to them).
I said this to demonstrate that it is possible and likely that people respect others on one basis because they see them as respectable. This may be because of their success, their looks, their words, their actions, their age ... but some will see reason enough to respect others because they are human (ashraf al makhluqaat), that they are alive, that they are the creatures of God. Some will go on respecting even those people who them disrespect, which is not quite the same as showing them no respect. Yes, it is harder to respect those who disrespect you, for example if someone calls me a dog and I say to them 'at your service' then that would be such a case. Of course there are limits and ghaira is present in all of us.
I know I should be respecting all things.

could you be married to such a person that doesn’t respect you or your loved ones. says a couple insults to you and about your friends/family? I can’t 
forgive them once or even a second time b/c they are human and flawed just like all of us but when it’s over and over again, enough is enough. no respect back after that

Well it depends upon the amount of disrespect shown. Marriage is a tricky issue since it is not a blood relationship.

so i think lot of people misunderstood the question a little bit........feeling of respect is almost always mutual.......i was asking about 'SHOWING RESPECT'....
