Onions, potatoes, garlic, ginger?
My mother doesn’t normally, but since it’s just me and hubby at home, things tend to go bad before I finish them.

its just ginger which i refrigerate, but i normally do not refrigerate potato, onion or garlic..
Re: Do you refridgerate these?
I refrigerate potatoes since they turn all wrinkly and old if i dont and ginger as well.
Re: Do you refridgerate these?
I once refrigerated onions and they became soooo sweet, yukh! Found out later that the starch turns to sugar when exposed to too much light, so yeah not a good idea. Never refrigerated onions either but im sure that cant be very good either as both potatoes and onions are meant to be stored in dry dark cool places. Ginger is ok wrapped in plastic or paper towels and garlic is a big no no. It sprouts immediately.
:)......refrigerating patatoes is big business......cold storage of patatoes is done to keep them from germinating........yes if you find a bargain then buy extra and put them in 40 degree F that is what the main compartment of frig is at.......not the freezer.
Re: Do you refridgerate these?
Potatoes should never be put in the fridge unless already cooked. Where is it a big business?

LOL Mohtarma, the bulb inside your refrigerator gets turned OFF as soon as you close the door. There is a switch at the door hinge. lol There is no light inside the refrigerator once the door is shut. lol
……that is so funny…not every one knows that…![]()

You cna do an experiment..try closing the door all the way slowly and you will see the light go off when you are about to close. lol
Re: Do you refridgerate these?
i refrigerate just about everthing , and i get red anions and red potatoes , never had any mishapp .........generally @ stores they've all fresh produce in cold storage
i even froze tomatoes ( heard so that this way they stay fresh for long)
Re: Do you refridgerate these?
None of them...
Re: Do you refridgerate these?
peeled garlic is frozen. takes less than 5 minutes to thaw (if you need to chop it) and while making salans it cooks along with the other things.
ginger is referigerated if it's whole. once it's chopped then it's frozen as well.
onions never referigerated. unless they are peeled. same with potatoes. keep it in a cool, dry place. onions and potatoes tend to sprout once they get slightly damp, and if you keep them together the onions really start growing. so store them separately, or really far away from each other. in the fridge i'm assuming the potatoes might start to get all soft and stuff.
Onions wen peeled and washed can be refrigerated. Garlic can be stored outside with their skin for weeks!
Ginger in fridge but it wud be better if u grate them or make a paste...If you keep it whole they get all wrinkly and dry.
Potatoes I didnt try...cuz it gets all wrinkly n browned
Re: Do you refridgerate these?
Potatoes can be peeled and soaked in water in a jug or so for couple of days, when ur sure that ur going to use them after some days. Other than that, potatoes should stay at a dark and dry place, same with the onions.
But if i have peeled too much onions, and i know im going to use any of it later on, i just put it in a plastic bag and keep it in the fridge for some days.
Other than that, i always freeze down ginger and use it when i need it. Garlic can actually be in room-temprature, and i keep mine under the sink and there is no smell until u peel it.
Re: Do you refridgerate these?
Hm, my onions and potatoes are kept in a little kitchen cart with baskets. It sits by the french doors that let in lots of light, so I guess that's not good...
Re: Do you refridgerate these?
Ginger and Garlic is ok to freeze - onions and potatoes a no no. Tomatoes can be frozen too and used in cooking afterwards. I freeze chopped bindi, chopped peppers to be used in omelettes, sliced mushrooms. Easy Peasy!
Re: Do you refridgerate these?
as most salans need garlic and ginger what i do is make a paste for both and freeze it along with pastes for tomotoes etc to use for pizza spaghetti etc.
whenever i need to make something i just microwave some and add it to the salan or the dish i am making. it makes life much easier and believe me it is awesome in taste. even now i am cooking aloo gosht hehe along with gs.
