mama I see what you are saying and I cant think of the last time i gave less than that but there were times where on purpose I paid cash and took change back or left a coin or two as a message, because i agree a small tip is an insult, which is in response to bad service which I consider an insult to the customer. The waiter is not doing me or anyone a favour by fulfilling my order, thats their job and if they cat do it right and ruin my dining experience, then they dont deserve a tip.
I mean things like forgetting what we ordered, entrees arriving before apetizer, wrong apetizer, havig bacon on apetizer when we specifically asked for no bacon, then taking apetizer away and bringing it back still with bacon. mixing up the order, being outright rude and rolling eyes when we are talking..and finally when the order is right, never checking back to see if we need anything or if things are okay, and then not even bothering to ask whether we want dessert or coffee, and just dropping a bill at the table.
rare experience really but someone like that should be fired let alone be given a tip.
Depending on the service, I normally pay between 10% and 15%.
I do have a question though: Should we tip buffet workers any less than of formal restaurants? I am talking about where you go in and pay first. The waiter brings you drinks but you get up and get your own food. All the waiter really doing is picking up the dirty dishes every 8-10 minutes or so. It's really not "serving", is it? Do they deserve as much tip as formal restaurant waiters?

Fired and find another line of work.
I give $0 for such encounters, but if it were a place I cared about going back to, I would address the bad service encounter with the owner/manager and thank or tip whoever was responsible for the part that was exceptional. I feel it necessary to explain to the owner why I wasn't leaving a tip for the server.
There are situations that are out of control of the server. As long as they are polite and as attentive to our needs as they can be, they deserve the minimum 15%. Let's face it, if he/she is a good server they're stressing out over whatever the bad situation it is they are having to deal with (short staff/bad management/bad support staff, etc) and deserve a tip more than ever. But if they are rude or toally inept, they don't derserve anything. Some are so clueless they would interpret your 10% as you being cheap and not as the consequence of their of their poor level of service.

oh yeah thats where a nie little note helps,
like good food, bad service, took 3 attempts to get order right help
oh yeah, and I pay with cash then, dont trust pissed off waiters with my credit card info.
and I completely understand when a waiter is working with bad cookign staff or they are short staffed and they explain it, buttaking their frustrations out on the customers are not going to make the stuation any better.

I'd do 2 things differently - I like to talk in person instead of writing a note (as evidenced by my confrontational mode in WA) and I don't have the cash you do throw around. Looks like it might be the Lucky Kabob instead of the Ritz Carlton for that promised dinner.

when going to new places I carry cash to cover just in case.
I think talking makes sens if its some place u go to often and things were just messed up.
if i am in some place justto check it out and will not be back or will not be back for some time, then i have no interest in talking to the waiter, the manager perhaps but not the waiter.
I mean I have been to restaurants where service was bad but the waiter did try, and even brought the manager explained that the kitchen messed up our order and all, and the manager woud offer apologies and tell us dessert is on the house, in such cases not only does the waiter gets the full tip but also what I would have spent on dessert.
but bad service and being oblivious or unconcerned about it, now thats a whole diff thing
I usually don't go to a restaurant- I sometimes get my food sometimes at the drive thru. I usually ask whether the meat is halaal when placing my order and if it is, I dont ask for change back- simple strategy :)
I think no price can be put to the respect which a waiter gives us, but we can atleast "thank" them with a smiling face and leave atleast some money on the table.
I don't like to allow any waiter to help me in putting on my coat, but I do feel sorry at the way they tolerate people shouting at them as they hurry up in all directions trying to please everyone, without caring about their own dignity.
p.s. The real reward to these waiters would be insha'Allah given in the life hereafter, then the shouting/ disgracing customers would realize their own worth.
Yes i always tip, even if it's crappy service (which haven't really had)..
do u ask if its halaal or if its zabeeha? cuz u kow arab joints have a diff definition of halal many times :D
no, I usually contend with the fact that it is halaal. u have been living in the west for quite long I assume- do you always for halaal? What about Pakistani players who go to Australia, UK, West Indies?

at many arab places in US halal does not mean its zabeeha, so if it is important to you then you may want to be specific when u ask them
We Indians & Pakistanis have spoilt our name in stingeness & haggling, especially the previous generation (maybe they were poor immigrants), that it's important we tip & be seen to be generous - to regain the respect we have lost.
If you travel to HK, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, you willl realise the hordes of Indians & Pakistanis that land there - haggling away, on each and every thing. No wonder the locals, do not even care to serve desis.
I always tip. The amount varies on the service (and looks ;)) but I never leave without giving some. I double it when the lunch is on company's account during business travel, etc.
