Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
That’s a very huge generalization of every Karachi person.

Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
I consider myself desi but others don’t. What to do? ![]()
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
Desi isn’t even reserved for just Indians, it’s for people from the south asian region - it includes Pakistan and even Bangladesh.
Heck, I’ve met Bangladeshis who have no problem saying they are “desi”. What does being from India or “loving India” have to do with it?
If you say you’re brown to a Mexican or a Filipino, they might even stare at you in confusion. Skin colour doesn’t say anything about where you are from.

Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?

Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly does Desi refer to? I was under the impression it referred to people from the subcontinent but I don’t think that is terribly accurate either.
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
Nobody in pakistan actually uses the term Desi. The word Desi is an invention of the people in the West to lump together all people from the Subcontinent, who speak similar language and look similar. I have never heard anyone refer to Pakistanis as “desis” in Pakistan. In any case, I have no issues with being called Desi. I don’t understand why anyone would. It’s just like Arabs, Latinos, and Hispanics.
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
des [desh] = country]
desi means belonging to your own country of birth or where you grew up as a child.
anyone from any where can be a desi…like…an American born in America and living in India will be called a “Desi Amreekan”, a British in similar situation will be called a “Desi Firangi” etc.
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
Mezghan, it’s a term used to loosely group together people of the subcontinent.. I think it’s being classed as belonging to that group which upsets some people so much..
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
Agree with your entire post Sir ji, just that the word is “Farangi”, not firangi. ![]()
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
I do not know if it exists in Urdu, but I’ve heard people use it when speaking Urdu. OP, pick some other issue to get particular about; this is not a worthwhile one. I’d rather be identified as Desi than brown. What about very light-skinned Pakistanis and Indians, should they be called “white” then? It just sounds off. The word Desi at least is broad enough to include a variety of skin colors and nationalities whereas ‘brown’ and ‘white’ are very restrictive. It reminds me of a friend who married an Arab man. Either from Jordan or Palestine, can’t remember now. On documents where he had to bubble in his race, he would select ‘white’ instead of Asian because he went by skin color. ![]()
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
how do you say desi ghee in urdu? qaumi roghan al cow?
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
Watch out everyone, roman urdu war is about to break out.
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
So ‘daisi’ = ‘native’ of the country in question (Sub-continent in the case of ‘daisi’) and used primarily outside of that dais.
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
janaab-e-man, aapne durust farmaayaa…aam aadmii chuN k firangiikahtaa hai is liye maiN ne ‘desi’ talaffuz iste’maal kiyaa aur maiN ne isii liye yeh alfaaz quotes meN likhe haiN. ise aap Ghalat-ul-'awaam ke zumur meN gardaan sakte haiN. ![]()
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
yes…exactly…native is a better word.
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
Ignore KKF. Theorist & Deeba1234 are correct. Do you want to be a desi too? Done! Honorary
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
But I called him Sir ji and presented a flower in the end. KKF ain’t taking no offense after this. nahi? ![]()
Re: do you consider yourself ‘desi’?
It’s not really native of the country. I’ve never heard of an American (farangi/firangi) being classified as a “desi”
The term is used in the west/people living outside of South Asia and most commonly used in US/Canada.
Basically refers to people who belong to the South Asian region because of similar food, languages, cultures.
