The word ‘desi’ makes me cringe, I don’t identify as one and I’ve got a good historical reason for that but I see a lot of Pakistanis(especially the indianized ones) that refer to themselves as desi, I would rather identify as ‘brown’.

I prefer desi to brown. I’m not a skin color, I’m more than that.
You don’t see a Chinese person prefer to be called Yellow. They’d rather be called Asian, or whatever they call them in UK.

Desi is a Sanskrit word, it doesn’t in exist Urdu and the South Indian people do not refer to themselves as desi nor do pashtun and balochi people in Pakistan refer to them selves as desi, and I don’t plan to either.

And I hope you do realize that a lot of Urdu words have basis in Sanskrit. Probably a lot more than Arabic/Persian.

‘Asian’ is normally used in the UK but it leads to too much confusion online..
