Many of us hold intense discussions on GS on various topics , some related to our religious beliefs, some cultural beliefs , political beliefs , some of us share such personal incidents of our lives here . Sometimes we lock horns and have fiesty discussions even trying to defend our stance ..
**Question is, have you ever changed your outlook/ beliefs / opinions based on all the discussion you have had here? Have you changed for the better?
yhe ONLY thing i care about is my DEEN so if i hear any views that are against my own views/beliefs, it becomes my religious duty to investigate/research the issues unless i've already researched/investigated. if the need be, i will gladly and thankfully adjust my view/beliefs.
I don’t. But I do get irritated over highly conservative and highly liberal views. I like to keep myself in check as I want to make sure I always choose the middle way coz middle way is the best way.
Over the years I have had several discussions here, some have actually changed me for the better .. made me more aware on the religious element .. though at that time defending our stance seems to be the best option but later on when you think about it , either of the two things happen:
you start seeing a different perspective on things and if its inline with the deen, you pick it up and change your stance
if its against the Islamic teaching, you feel more and more thankful to Allah for letting you remain strongly on the right path and for letting you see the light ..
Either way , these discussions really help putting the perspective in place .. bless all the nice , intelligent people here
True hareem.. question is, do you not accept any kind of change in your views despite heavy discussions? like a full 360 degree turn on your opinion on a matter?
i have seen myself change my views a couple of times when it seemed like it would be prudent to give thought to a point someone brought up I hadn't thought of before.
Changed positions several times in the course of a discussion. Once you realize the other person makes more sense, it is no big deal no accept the new truth as you now see it.
^ couple of times only?
@ Hareem - there really is no middle. On each issue there is a right position and a wrong position - even taking into account shades of gray.
No, not anymore. I’m gonna be hitting 29 soon so I have formed my opinions regarding almost everything. For example, I have experimented with showing sleeves and cleavage, niqab and chador, headscarf and abaya, headscarf with stylish clothing and make up, and finally on and off headscarf with modest clothing and natural looking make up. I’m pretty much set on it. I don’t think I’ll be going back to showing sleeves or wearing niqab.

I have found it really good in clearing my doubts and few confusions i got regarding religion. I find guppies as great advisers and really friendly, few guppies treat everyone like family and show concern and help in motivate showing the right way, just because of those guppies GS is like a little world with lots of sincere guidance
@Hareem. Aapke posts kabhi serious hothe hain or kabhi bit sarcastic. Setting aside dress code, I would contend you have evolved the most in the 2 years I have been here. Me thinks you had sarcasm mode on! I would def put you in the category willing to change positions.

my answer is a vehement YES!
I have learned much from the past 15 years of interactions here on GS.....
I think much of my "growth" is very apparent and some of it is hidden in my heart.
Life is about learning and growing, if I cease to do that then I will cease to benefit from the bounties that are still out there and unexplored by me. I don't think that I will ever be done with "learning".....

29 is too old to change outlook?
I wasn't being sarcastic at all. :D I'm always willing to learn from others but at the same time I don't like being told what to do. I think the change you're talking about is a result of coming out of baby blues and depression. I'm still coming out of that mode.
do i change my views? a little, mostly about things i just assumed before and know better now. but what changed most is the kind of things that bother me. i'm a little more open to differences of opinions. its a big planet, we can share. (but please god, only one diwana per universe).
