I think Pakistanis outside identify themselves as Pakistani because they see that they are "different" from people around them.
Children of a Romanian immigrant will consider themselves American (being white), children of Ugandan immigrant will consider themselves American (being black), but children of a Pakistani immigrant won't consider themselves exactly American (being neither white or black).
Only because you look Pakitani so you want to call yourself Pakistani? Pakistani people also look like Turkish or Iranian people. Its not only the look I think.
Passports and ID card don't give you an identity. There are many many people in Pakistan who don't even have an National Identity Card (Shanakhti card), yet they are Pakistanis.
Just to go with that, I look Arab. That or people mistake me from being from Iran.

On the other hand, an Iranian here thought I am Uzbek or some other Altaic Turk, while many Pakistanis think I am Spanish.
It looks funny when they start talking about me in Urdu in front of me thinking I won't understand. haha.

Well, I used the word 'Pakistani' because that's what most of us are here. But the emphasis was on looking 'different'.

This reminds me of once when i was taking a cab somewhere…wearign shalwar kameez..and i spoke to the guy in urdu a little bit..I had to call my uncle and after I got of f the phone with him, the driver asked me where I was from and wheN i said Lahore etc, he said “ohhh I thought you were just a Latina wearing shalwar kameez.”
I look like persian.....as many people have stated who saw me...
but I am Pakistani not because I was born there and not because I was born in Muslim gharana.
I am Pakistani because I choose to be. The land was given to us with a simple fact of freedom. It is where I belong, and everything about Pakistan is amazing.

I look Pakistani and I call myself Pakistani very proudly, There was this customer other day at work who I had argument with and tht a$$ole called me stupid INDIAN LOL so basically he was insulting people from Indian not Pakistanis :D
