Yesterday on CNN there was a program on Reincarnation with Sanjay Gupta, Deepak Chopra and Dinesh D’souza. They said that around 24% of Americans believe in reincarnation. Reincarnation is a central tenet of Hinduism. It is surprising to see so many Catholics believe in reincarnation.

why do people forget who they were in their past birth? If the purpose of the soul to come back to Earth is to learn the lessons of life, why then one forgets the lessons that s/he has learnt already in their past life, so s/he can work on other stuff that he missed ?

I believe in something far more difficult which is the Resurrection. The same body and soul, not a new body with the old soul. This happens on the Day of Judgement.
Not that it cannot happen, but that it is not amongst those things that do happen according to our belief system. It can be reasoned that people only believe in reincarnation because of the perception that this life is the reality and since they find it hard to believe in separation they see characteristics in their loved ones or animals etc ... Funny how most Americans that believe in reincarnation call their pets reincarnations of their older loved ones ... in Hinduism this concept means that they had bad karma to be brought back in an inferior form .... LOL

Yeah, Islam does not anything like re-incarnation. So being a Muslim, I dont believe it at all.

And how is that difficult [or as some people say it impossible]. That’s what the Makkans used to say, that why the Quran answers them several times. It challenges them, do they say that the resurrection is impossible, have they considered this, and it mentions as an example, ‘Have they considered themselves’. **What were they, they came from a drop so small that could not be seen and the verse goes on to say which is more remarkable that they were created from an insignificant drop or that someday all their bones will be gathered together and they will be made new again. Which one is the more difficult task? It's not even as difficult as what we all are witness of. **
And as another example it mentions [in several places] the dead earth;
*A Sign for them is the earth that is dead: We do give it life, and produce grain therefrom, of which ye do eat. [36:33] *
And among His Signs in this: thou seest the earth barren and desolate; but when We send down rain to it, it is stirred to life and yields increase. Truly, He Who gives life to the (dead) earth can surely give life to (men) who are dead. For He has power over all things. [41:39 ]

If I'm in a train carriage and I tell myself that if I opened the door of the carriage and stepped out I will step out into a cosy room will that make my dellusions real?
No! If I delude myself and step out I will end up killing myself. The cosy room is not really going to materialise outside the carriage no matter how much I tell myself it is.
People try and comfort themselves with reincarnation because they're sacred of truth (death and ressurection) but the truth will come to pass no matter how much you deny it, might as well prepare yourself for it before it's too late.
Ressurection is going to happen whether you acknowledge it or reject it, the ball is in your court you can carry on living in ignorance and be a loser when the day of ressurection comes or you can acknowledge it and prepare yourself for it.

As a result of the possibility that perhaps you have read my post in haste, hopefully what you have posted here you should realise is not in disagreement with what I have written.
Rather what you have written only complements my statement.
Creating in the first instance is more difficult than resurrection
in turn Resurrection is more difficult than the idea of reincarnation.
Furthermore I said that I believe in it ... not that I do not believe in it.
