OK, maybe its not that simple. I’m wondering about people who live in non-Muslim countries where halal meat is not readily available in all stores.
So in this situation some people say u can eat:
Kosher
or Doesn’t have to b halal or kosher, just not pig meat.
or Nothing other than strictly halal, slaughtered in the Islamic way.
I asked this question bcos i met a new friend recently who told me that when she lived in America she used to eat meat products at fast-food joints and restaurants, bcos she thought it was ok to do so bcos of the lack of halal restaurants. It was common practice amongst Muslims. Now she says she regrets that bcos she doesn’t think it is correct and sticks to strictly halal.
From my perspective (based on my UK life experience!), i would say i know only 3 Muslims who do consume non-halal food from supermarkets / restaurants, but all other Muslims I know would not. This may b bcos it there theres always a halal place within reach of them, or bcos of the society, but probably more personal belief.
Personally i wouldn’t want to eat anything that i don’t think has been slaughtered in the islamic halal manner, but i do wonder that if i was brought up in another culture / community (but same religion), would i still hold with this view?
I see arabs come here and dine at KFC, in my innocent days i was horrified that these newly visiting muslims don’t know that the food is haram here, not like their own countries where its all halal. So one day i told one of them, he was like, oh, we know, but we r allowed to eat it bcos if u can’t get a halal KFC here, u can eat at a non-halal one.
Erm, this isn’t really meant to b in the religion section bcos its more about food.
