Do semi-working women exist?

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

Why is it that any time a woman wants to be successful at something, it's taken as if she's trying to show off to the men. Can women not do things to make themselves happy? No, women's lives do not always revolve around pleasing a man or showing up a man or anything to do with a man.

That being said, I'm probably what you'd consider the 'semi-working' type. I was never too career oriented, but I did always want to work because well...I do need something to keep me busy and the extra money is always welcome. I had to quit my job when i got married and move continents. Now, if it was a career woman, she may have not done so. But for me it was easy to just quit and move, and I've been unemployed for a year now. But soon we go back, and once again I'll start working. So I'm flexible that way. I don't mind quitting my job again if we need to relocate for hubby's work. In fact - I'd love to do that. I like uprooting and walking into an unfamiliar scenario, because I think those are the experiences what makes life interesting. And not just comfort zone routine. But then again, I say this because it's easy for me to just quit. If I was more driven in my career, I may not be able to just get up and move.

Also, once/if we do have kids, I might take a couple years off, but I might want to go back to work again. But that would depend when/if the scenario happens. All I know is, I'm open to going either way. But I do think women should have their own interests and hobbies too. I'm not driven when it comes to career - but I have a lot of interests. I've taken up photography lessons, I want to take up interior designing courses. So even if I'm not working, I'd like to have my own time to do the things I like doing.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

hmm…it seems such type really exists…:hmmm:

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

What’s up with you saying " so called career"? Why is a woman’ s career not a real one in your head? You may not have been surrounded by career successful women, but they are pretty much everywhere.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

I have heard of cases...where initially the girl and family claim that she is semi-working type.......but when the time comes.....she comes out to be a working type...... any tips on how to identify the true semi-working types from the pretending to be semi-working working ones???

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

One way would be to to see what their chosen career is. Doctors probably will not fall into "semi working" category...neither will someone who has an MBA and seems to working VERY hard to climb the corporate ladder.

By talking to a potential rishta and doing some independent research about her career....it should be relatively easy to find out just how flexible hours are in that field and whether or not it will be easy or hard for her to switch to part-time IF she chooses to do so.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

A doctor who's a GP here in the UK could be 'semi working'.. My female GP only does 3 days a week.. it's not uncommon..

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

^ I learned something new. Question: Is this only for GPs? OR do doctors is other specialties in UK have the same flexibility?

ButtSb: I should've mentioned previously.....take into account which country you plan on living in AFTER the marriage to do research on career details.

I am the semi-working type and I am from current generation, not an Aunty :snooty:

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

Only GPs.. if they can find a practice that is willing to employ a part-time GP.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

I've seen it work the other way round (sample size is limited to friends who got married in the last 5-10 years). The workaholics and girls working more than 12 -14 hours a day, start working much less hours when they get married.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

Paheli, it's possible for specialists in the private sector as well..

My dad works only 3 days a week now.. and he chose the days he wanted..

I know many others who only work certain days in private hospitals.. some do NHS work as well, others don't..

I know quite a few female GPs who work for the NHS only and also only work part-time..

Flexibility is possible..

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

You generally have to be fully specialised before you can start doing stuff like that.

The majority of Doctors here are employed by the NHS solely throughout their careers until they have advanced enough that they can start working privately or fully switch to it. I don't anyone below Consultant level that does private work.

If you are an NHS GP with your own practice or as a partner, you can chose your hours. You can chose to employ part time GPs. You can employ locum GPs.. a lot of female GPs locum because it's an easier way to work just a few days a week... it's just a "job" though.

If you are working to advance your career, working part-time is not really an option.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

I know a Manager in an accounting firm. She went on maternity leave a couple years ago. Near the end of her leave, she got pregnant again and took another year off. Now with two babies, it's just hard for her to come back to work full time. So what she does now is contract work during tax season on 2-3 days of her choosing. She also previously brought some clients to the firm and still retains those clients. So for these and certain other clients, she works from home on an as needed basis and meets with them in her own time. She comes to all the training sessions arranged by the firm each year, so she is up to date with the technical. And she plans to return to work on a more routine basis once her kids start KG.

"Semi-working women", as you call them, do exist in almost every profession.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

Part time work is available in most professions, you just need to network with the women in the field and see how they're doing it.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

Urgh, can't deal with all this incorrect advice I'm seeing. Just talk to the girl, and have her explore her options. There are always options.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

Semi-working women are basically your average 'employed' women. They could be doing anything from retail to clerical work.

The women of specific career and caliber has to put a lot of blood and sweat into her profession before she reaches a position where she could demand part time working hours.

As usual the simpletons of GS confuse employed woman with a career oriented woman.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

^No-one’s forcing you to come onto GS and post amongst us ‘simpletons’

For someone who goes on about ‘class’ all the time it’s ironic that you seem to lack basic manners..

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

Agreed.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

yes me...I work 18 hours a week for my own sanity, and I have the flexibility to do it from home.

Re: Do semi-working women exist?

I wish I was a semi working woman...like Kate Middleton.
