Do Muslims keep pet dogs?

Sounds like a stupid question.

From reading something I am curious?

Yes you are surely allowed to keep dogs, but OUTSIDE the house meaning you can have it outside in your lawn, garden or backyard but not in the house it self. Its been said in islam i might be wrong but i am pretty sure that angels repent where ever they see a dog.

-Salman

Only as guards and never inside the house...

Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, lap dogs or Lhasas are all examples of pet dogs and not allowed...

Anytime a dog's saliva touches a Muslim's skin he must wash it 7 times before he can pray again...

It's not as forbidden as pig...

tell me this.. if a dog's saliva is so filthy and unclean.... why are Muslims allowed to eat of animals killed by hunting dogs??

what is the Islamic ruling on ferrets and parakeets?

PA there's a big difference between eating a hunted animal killed by a dog and standing before Allah(swt) to offer prayers. Please keep it in perspective. therefore I dunno about washing 7 times but I would definately make another wudhu.

Couple of things PA…

  1. Hunting dogs bring meat which must be cooked…Fire is a purifier in my way of belief…It means if a pig defecates on my plate I can wash it and rinse it with fire to make it ‘paak’ and I can still eat out of it…

Third, since I am a Hanafi my belief is well illustrated by the link below…

I am sure there are others…

I know you are a Quraneen, those that reject the Ahadith and follow just the Quran, fine with me…Just know that I, in my belief hold the Ahadith very dear to my heart as you think they are nothing but falsehoods…

Ahadith for me are stepping stones whereas the Quran is my guide over troubled waters…

I hope we can achieve mutual repect without stepping on anyone’s toes…Thanks…

zman, how is there a difference between a prey caught by a 'filthy' animal and that animal's saliva touching you??

What is more severe or 'gross'? the saliva touching your skin.. or eating prey which has been deep in the mouth of a 'filthy' beast??

Lajawab my views and beliefs are what I write here.. don't go guessing further. Can we discuss something for once without the usual sect-baiting??

This might help you PA.

1-It is not haraam to own a dog, though it is not hygienic and, therefore, not permissible to keep a dog in the house.
2-It is not haraam to touch a dog - or any other animal, for that matter. If the saliva of a dog touches you or any part of your clothing, then it is required [that] you … wash the body part … and the item of clothing [that was] touched by the dog’s mouth or snout.
3-It is [necessary for] every Muslim who owns animals, whether for farming/work purposes or as pets, to provide adequate shelter, food, water, and, when needed, veterinary care for their animals.
4-Arrangements need to be made, if one is leaving for Hajj or going to be away from home, to have one’s animals taken care of, as well.
5-It is haraam/not permissible to use one’s dog for dogfighting, as one is causing harm to them. No, it is not natural, for in nature, the weaker would submit and retreat, and the stronger would not continue to pursue in order to kill.
6-Religious traditions hold that if a dog - or woman - passes in front of you as you prepare to pray, it pollutes your purity and negates your prayer. Dogs are permissible as watchdogs or for other utilitarian purposes but not simply for companionship.

Having said that… i will back up my answer to angels not entering in the house while dogs being inside the home.

But alongside with this, are many hadiths that call for showing kindness to animals in general, including dogs, and the permissibility of keeping dogs for hunting, guarding, etc. It’s further reported that some of the Prophet’s companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, were in the habit of keeping animals for farming purposes or even for fun and pleasure.

So to clarify this confusion, we need to interpret those hadiths in the light of the Qur’an. The Qur’an makes it clear that there is no harm in eating animals grabbed by hunting dogs. Furthermore, it’s through the Qur’an that we get acquainted with the story of the Cave Companions (ahl-ul-khaf) who had with them their dog; this clearly shows that dogs have historically been used for guarding the person and the property of its owners.

This also indicates that dogs must be treated well they are of the animals referred to in the verse:
There is not an animal (that lives) on the earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but (forms part of) communities like you.

Surah 6 Verse 38
Having said this, we have to ask: ‘How is it that the religion that is rich in all these fine precepts about animal rights, is the same religion that warns its followers about getting into contact with dogs and even emphasizes that the utensils licked by dogs should be washed 7 times, one of them with earth?’

The answer is very simple. The basic rule in Islam is the permissibility of keeping dogs for hunting and guarding. Still, the exception to the rule is: excessiveness must be avoided as much as possible. The care and concern for human beings should take higher priority over the care of animals, and the reward for that is greater.

Thats quite ridiculous. I am a Muslim and I have two dogs and they stay inside my house. I have had no problems with any angels or getting a summon from Up above to cut it out. Whats the big deal about keeping them inside?
BTW I did not see any mention about the Dogs and keeping them outside the house in Quraan Majid.

As far as the dogs saliva is concerned it is actually anitbacterial. If a dog is hurt and wounded the dog licks himself; the dog actaully heals faster than taking him to a vetr. Medicinally speaking the saliva has healing powers (some enzyme) you can search the web.

**AAG: **Islam teaches moderation, and has a great emphasis on hygiene. So, in my understanding you can keep dogs if they are of some use but you have to take care of them & yourself.

As a Muslim has to pray multiple times a day and for that not only their place of worship is suppose to be clean but they also should have clean clothes & all. For this reason, most Muslim scholars concur that pets, dogs included, should stay outside the house. Unless off course you have a fish. :-)

I don't know where Lajawab has come up with the 7 times washing thing. Usually making sure that you have washed after handling anything outside, is good enough.

Interesting fact: Muslims from Malaysia (known locally as the ethnic group Malay) have a keen dislike for dogs. They will not enter a house that has a dog, and would rather die than have to touch one.

Actually it’s not…It’s just something you don’t agree with and someone believes in…

I have had dogs too, but never inside the house…

And angels hardly ever tap you on the shoulder to say, ‘excuse me, can you leash that Doberman…I don’t like the way he looks at me…’…:hoonh:

Oh and BTW, I didn't mean to say that dogs by nature are un-hygienic, but comparatively speaking to humans. I am sure there are people who keep their dogs more groomed than my next door neighbor grooms himself but we are talking about general terms here.

kashif sahib i dont know which article you are reading but here i will quote you for you again....

"What makes this issue so debated is the fact that there are many Prophetic hadiths that warn Muslims about getting into contact with dogs. In fact, some of these hadiths give warnings that going against this rule takes away a sizeable amount of reward from a person’s record (of good deeds) daily. Adding to that is the Prophet’s order for killing the dogs in Medina and the Angel Gabriel’s refusal to enter the Prophet’s house in one of his visits, citing the presence of dog as reason. "

Thanks for all the replies. Educational IMHO.

The reason that I asked the Q to begin with was that I read something on the order of dog's being used to search people in Iraq and that the idea of dogs salvia touching people, especially women, is pretty much considered obscene and offensive.

I didn't know that.

And I was curious because dogs are not really found offensive in western culture.

Of course one washes their hands after touching a dog to rid oneself of germs of course, but mostly westerners consider dogs as friends and not as offensive unclean animals.

From the medical point of view, which is our main concern here, the hazards to human health and life from keeping and playing with dogs are not to be ignored. Many people have paid a high price for their ignorance, as the tapeworm carried by dogs is a cause of chronic disease, sometimes resulting in death.

This worm is found in man, in cattle, and in pigs. But it is found in fully developed form only in dogs, wolves and rarely in cats. These worms differ from others in that they are minute and invisible, consequently, they were not discovered until very recently.’
