We're talking Uk here, right? Maybe I'm missing something...how would they even carry out the threat if the wife fought the divorce? Is it that easy to get a divorce without mutual consent? Aren't they afraid they'll get taken to the cleaners with the settlement?

I know of an uncle who say this to his Kids. His daughter is probably immune to such threats now. But her mother must be a brave woman for still be able to putting up with that kind of crap.

99% of the time the threat isn't carried out but it's enough to scare the wives (for the average older generation wife there's not much worse than the thought of being divorced or 'alone'.. it's just as much about social stigma and emotional dependency).. Usually they're just scare tactics.. like threatening to kick the son or daughter out if they don't marry someone the parents want or saying mum or dad will have a heart attack..

Desi mums of that generation do often take it out on the kids rather than standing up to or confronting their husbands.. just the way a lot of them seem to be wired..

She may be a forgiving woman, but brave she is not - not in my opinion. Maybe we should stop calling women who put up with crap 'brave'. It is cowardice to put up with constant injury to your self-respect.
