99% of the time the threat isn’t carried out but it’s enough to scare the wives (for the average older generation wife there’s not much worse than the thought of being divorced or ‘alone’.. it’s just as much about social stigma and emotional dependency).. Usually they’re just scare tactics.. like threatening to kick the son or daughter out if they don’t marry someone the parents want or saying mum or dad will have a heart attack..
Desi mums of that generation do often take it out on the kids rather than standing up to or confronting their husbands.. just the way a lot of them seem to be wired..
