Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

we want to keep a seating chart…but i really don’t think they work??! it just ends up being chaos, with aunties feeling they can just switch chairs and tables…and people getting offended cause they didn’t get the table close to the stage…

did anyone have a wedding where this worked out?

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

Umm... I don't think this would help in a desi setup. Atleast, I haven't been to one where seating charts were kept. People tend to sit wherever they like.

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

9 out of 10 weddings I have been to have had seating charts which have been stuck to.

A board is placed at the entrance of the venue and a family member will show the guests to their seats. Once people are seated if they wish to change seats they can but normally people just stay where they are.

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

I have been to a wedding with seating charts and it was fine. On a table outside at entrance a family member greeted everyone and guided them to pick out their name from the table.. They had favors with the family's name/person's name & seat location. Most people obliged...and I think the host did a good job of mixin gup people so they would mingle...etc....not bad at all. And the close family and friends got the seats close to the stage on either side...it made sense.

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

i dont think it can work... coz there are so many ppl at an avg desi wedding. plus u never know who is talking to whom now a days!... so its better they guests get their own seats. and close family and friends can have closer seats.
i have gone to a few weddings with assigned seats..... didnt work!!... at all!!

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

2 weddings I went to with seating charts, didn't work out. In both instances, the barat brought an excess of 50 - 100 people which totally screwed everything up. Finding a seat alone was a blessing, considering all the other problems bringing additional guests resulted in.

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

I think assigned seating is a great idea- that way you can make sure your closest friends and family are near you on your big day. But it's important to be really strategic when deciding where to put people because you don't want anyone to get offended. The weddings which I have been to; people have generally stuck to the seating arrangements but have gotten up to mingle with people they know which is fine.

I think sometimes we go over the top with trying to follow western traditions, forgetting that some things just wont work for us and that isn't an insult!

Why would you give yourself the extra headache of organising a seating plan for 500 plus guests when you have so much other stuff to worry about?

Can you really keep track of exactly how many people will be attending from each family ie distance dads friends?

I think its a headache and unnecessary and will only piss you off when people dont keep to it.

Keep your day as hassle free for yourself as possible.

What we are doing is writing reserved seats on some of the tables at the front for me and my fiancee's immediate family and the rest can sit where they please.

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

omg

i wouldnt even think ov it
my auntie had a seating chart and it had become a chaos it had ended up to b a zoo lol

everybody wanted to sit really close to the stage so we had a bunch of people sittin right infront of the stage an it was lukin a mess.

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

Assigned seating works sometimes. Know your audience. If they seem like the sort of people who are willing to be herded into assigned seats - it's great. Otherwise, just reserve tables for the selected guests and let the rest of the people seat themselves.

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

I went to a wedding with assigned seating and it was a disaster. Best thing to do is reserve certain tables for family and close friends but let everyone else sit wherever they want.

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

nooooo. people like to sit with friends, move around, move chairs. etcc etcc

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

I dont think assigned seating would work for my family. Telling my future in laws were to sit isnt going to be a good way to start a relationship with them.... har har har...

... I guess it really depends on what your family and audience is like.

DF-- I agree with you... why create extra work....

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

For my sister's nikah party, we tried this. It was a disaster. Aunties simply picked up their cards and moved them somewhere else all the while complaining:

"aray hatao isay...kahan le jakey ghusar diya humein"

So no...it doesnt work.

Careful ladies...you dont want the desi coming out!!!!

Ahahaha Reha.... love it!

I think its easier if its less guests and outside pakistan, higher probability it works, but thats just my thought on it :)

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

Well I’ve only ever been to one wedding with this and it worked awesomely. Everyone stuck to it. A member of the family stood at the entrance with a clipboard :halo: And then after greeting you and stuff he went on to tell everyone what table number was theirs… So like we all went with our extended family, about 4 of us families went in together so he said ours were tables 12,13,14 (something like that).. so basically we all stuck to those tables but all the kids sat together… mums on one table.. dads on the other.. was good

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

I've attended 3 Pakistani weddings in the last 18 months and the assigned seating worked perfectly for 2 weddings and was a nightmare for the 3rd wedding. There were family members of the bride that threatened to walk out of the wedding because of where they were assigned seating (at the kiddie table).

So like I said, know your audience. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

Re: Do Assigned Seating Charts Actually Work at Desi Weddings?

We dont have proper RSVP system in place, plus when we say Mr and Mrs X and family in our invitation cards, we are even inviting maids and nannys to our receptions. As mehnaz mentioned, there is always 5-10 % more people than you invited, so seating chart is not going to work.

Of course a seating chart/place cards CAN work at a desi wedding! If you are inviting people who are civil and can follow directions, place cards a great place to keep your event organized and run smoothly. It also prevents people from walking around in the hall and being disrespectful while people are giving speeches.

You just have to be organized and put a person in charge of this job. It can work out great. Also, when you invite a couple who doesn't know anyone, it helps to have them sit at a table with people with whom they can mingle.
