In a series for the Discovery Channel, Professor Hawkingsaid it was perfectly rational to assume intelligent life exists elsewhere, but warned that aliens might simply raid Earth for resources and then move on.
He said “The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.”

Its weird to assume that any intelligent life form would have a social skills of Christopher Columbus. What if the Aliens are from Gene Roddenberry's group who was the creator of prime directive.
The existance of Aliens is Possible and DO exist. We believe in Them ..well atleast as a Muslim I do. but due to our limited knowledge given to us by Allah we can NOT precieve or as you said contact them. Its called the belief in the unknown.
100 of billions galaxies in the universe, 100 of billions stars in each galaxy and you believe that only our star (sun) has a planet with life forms living on it?
I doubt if Allah has prohibited us from contacting them. I believe that in a given period of time, we should be able to contact some.
I beleive so, however, i on the other hand have the belief that a muslim who reaches a state of 'taqwa' and Allah SWT opens his gates of mercy upon that person and ultimatly him having 'ilhaam'.. i.e. that person in otherwords a 'wali' of Allah CAN precieve and see the other makhlooqaat in this universe and beyond.
and yes .. I also beleive so that we maybe able to contact them, but like i said ..our Emaan needs to be of that state that there are ALIENS and not just hoax .. i see this a possibility because if a kaamil sheikh can contact the jinn after doing 'chilla of particular wazeefa' then why not maybe one day the human race be able to contact Aliens ..after all if hollywood can actually think it up that there are aliens .. then that same hollywood IS humans after all..

InshaAllah in near future ..i will try to get a hold of a PHD subject on this specific issue where the brother of my sheikh, he did a phd in al azhar uni cairo .. on the astronomy , astrology and galaxies etc mentioned in the quraan and through hadith.. its an amazing subject ..and it took them 3.5 years to complete it cos it was in so much depth ..
but your right … Allah made EVERYTHING for a reasson.. if one planet can have a life form, then why cant 8 others in our galaxy have other life forms .. and then theres billions of galaxies like you said ..Allah aint just gona create all these planets so we can make a poem about the nine planets in our science lessons .. they all ahev a purpose .. and I beleive that this is it that there are other life forms … yet similarly .. those aliens may think they are human and consider us humans as aliens …

I do agree though that with billions of galaxies with billions of stars each theres a good chance life exists outside the milky way. But then maybe we're underestimating the title ashraf-ul-makhlooqat.

Metallic life form may not exists because of the physical properties of metal, but I think scientists do believe in the possibility of Silica based life form.

we all have certain amount of different elements including metal in our body but when we say carbon base, we are saying case that is the highest quantity in our body, I think around 20%
Having said that, there are certain things that we can be sure of, like our base cannot be metallic cause it can expand and contract. It cannot be of element of higher atomic weight (i.e. the elements that dont exist on earth) cause those elements are unstable and easily break up into 2 elements of lower atomic weight, so a long lasting life form cannot be comprised of unstable elements.
Then again we are made out of stardust, an ingredient that is common around the universe, so any noticeable life cannot be formed out of any exotic element if that element is indeed exotic or rare.
