DIY PC Build

AsSalaamo Alaikum everyone,

I hope you’re all well. I’m hoping to get your feedback on a build i’m planning. My current desktop is a few years old now, and I feel it’s time to refresh for another few years to come.

Here’s my part list so far, please comment/add/remove parts as needed to suite your recommendation.

Intel i7-6700K Processor
Asus ROG Maximus VIII Hero Motherboard
G. Skills Trident Z 32GB DDR4 3200
Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 4GB OC Edition 256bit GPU
Samsung Evo Pro 250GB SSD + WD/Seagate 7200RPM 1TB for storage
LG/Pioneer sata Blu Ray writer
EVGA SuperNOVA Full Modular 850W PSU 80+Gold
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler
Cooler Master Storm Trooper black case

Asus VG278HE monitor w/Nvidia 3D Vision 2 Kit

I’m not sure which OS I’ll run on it yet. Maybe I’ll stick with Win 7, or do Win 10 Pro

Objectives: Support for 3D gaming and content, and overall fast performance for a while to come

Re: DIY PC Build

Fedora 21.

Re: DIY PC Build

An alternative, although a less attractive alternative to the build would be to buy a pre-built ASUS ROG G20CB from bestbuy. Retails for almost as much as the cost of parts, but lacks in some areas where the custom build excels in terms of parts used.

Re: DIY PC Build

Make a tutorial vid when u make it to benefit others. Good luck :chai:

Re: DIY PC Build

Does linux provide good 3D support? I think Win10 might be the route to go.

If you have Win7 or above, you get a free key. I think that MS now allows you to use non-windows 10 key instead of going through upgrade and obtaining a key.

Re: DIY PC Build

AMD processors are good in gaming.

Re: DIY PC Build

Noo Intel FTW ! :snooty:

Re: DIY PC Build

Thanks brother Monk, but I have the same question as Doppleganger. How is the support for most game titles? Especially 3D and VR for future? I wish I had a programming mind like you and others, but unfortunately I’ve stuck with packaged OS’s like mac and pc because of the ease of installation, troubleshooting, and use. :frowning:

I might have to explore that option. Have not had an AMD based computer since late 90s.

:hehe: I do have an Intel bias. Always been an Intel fan.

Re: DIY PC Build

Why the blu ray writer tho?

Re: DIY PC Build

Wait for Pascal or Polaris. 970 is a meme 3.5gb card. 32 is over kill, go for 16gb ram.

not really.

Re: DIY PC Build

No freakin way. I have made use of 32gb RAM. Believe it or not. I am not a gamer though, my use it is purely for VMs. I guess my point is you can use all 32gb RAM depending on what you use it for.

Re: DIY PC Build

Yep, RAM is the very first thing which runs out when dealing with VMs. You can get away with 16gb but 32gb is pretty much minimum if you are doing anything other than simple internet browsing and word processing, etc. and if you are like me and get addicted to 100+ browser tabs then 32GB a limitation not overkill!

DIY PC Build

wa alaikum asSalaam...

I'm silently reading this thread. What's a VM?

Re: DIY PC Build

Virtual Machine (VM)

DIY PC Build

ahh, thanks!

Re: DIY PC Build

That’s a nice set up. :k:
Wouldn’t the bios fix overcome the bug?

It’s good to have an optical drive, just in case.

I thought about it, but there doesn’t seem to be an exact release date other than projected mid 2016 release.

True. 32GB would become essential depending on tasks. The motherboard supports up to 64 gigs.

Re: DIY PC Build

Yes but I wonder what other bugs are there undiscovered with that one. You should be okay for the most part.

DDR3 and DDR4 prices have come down significantly since I bought DDR4 in 2014 and 32GB really is the sweet spot… heck, I have 256GB (between 4 servers) in my lab and sometimes it becomes a challenge as its the first thing you end up overcommitting/oversubscribing for VMs.

Re: DIY PC Build

What is DDR3 and DDR4? Are these 16 and 32 GB RAM respectively?

Re: DIY PC Build

DDR3 and 4 are variants of dynamic random access memory (DRAM)… DDR4 4th generation released in 2014 while DDR3 was 3rd gen released in 2007
