I have painted roof and exterior and wallpapered internal walls. I reackon the key to it is preparation before painting. Thats means, sanding, gib blocking, masking etc… needs to be done well.
What have you painted over?
Next project is tiling showers and bathroom…
Re: DIY , Paint the house ..
i would use a primer first so the paint can stick properly and do 2 coats of paint
Re: DIY , Paint the house ..
Flyin …
what are you saying … I never did all that stuff
… just got the delux paint pot and a roller brush and some spirit and started painting
…
Ekhan, primer sounds like a good idea …
LOL - by getting spirits, did you used oiled base paint?
Like Ekhan said, primer then a coats of paint. Depending on the type of paint you are using, you can get away without a primer.
Before painting you need to have you wall smoothed out, weather you need to sand it or clean stains off etc....
If your wall is too rough, a good idea is to use painting paper first on the wall and then paint over painting paper.
Re: DIY , Paint the house ..
flyin yeah it was oil paint actually … One of our walls needed it , so I got that one .. I guess normal gloss finish paint or satin finish paint wont need a primer then:hmmm:
The walls are being made smooth at the moment , infact the whole house will get painted first by professionals .. later I plan to paint a single wall in the drawing room to give it a bold look… so wanted tips to better painting … ![]()
Re: DIY , Paint the house ..
It is doable, but it just takes time. We opted to get a professional painter/decorator in as it was cheaper to employ someone to do the work than take time off from our jobs. Plus it meant not having to breath in the paint fumes lol :D
Tips:-
*You need a clean smooth surface before painting - we had our skimming done so the plastering was clean and crisp.
*Use a roller and then do the edges with a paintbrush.
*Don't paint in one direction - paint as if you are drawing the letter 'W' over and over again on the wall - this eliminates the chance of getting obvious lines in the pain.
*Use masking tap to avoid getting paint on door frames/skirting boards etc

Re: DIY , Paint the house ..
they say yellow is the safest color to paint ... it shows the least amount of brush strokes :D
but yea .. 2 coats (depends on the color really .. if one coat does it, good, if not , do a second one ... a third one in rare cases), and cleaning the wall before applying paint with that spirit kind of thing ... and the W styled strokes :D

Re: DIY , Paint the house ..
I think if you are painting over a painted drywall, a primer is not required.
Re: DIY , Paint the house ..
interior or exterior. Interior definatley doable - go room by room.
Remember it takes longer to prep the room - tape up broders, windows, putting things down on the floor - than to paint but make sure you prep the room correctly.
Re: DIY , Paint the house ..
Cover the carpet/floor well with tarp or some heavy sheet.
Re: DIY , Paint the house ..
^ or get HUGE plastic sheets pretty cheap from the painter store and then you can throw it away.
Re: DIY , Paint the house ..
^ yup, sounds a better option.
But honestly, I can write stories about how useful Tarp is. We always have one big tarp sheet at home and it helps in so many way that its just amazing.
Re: DIY , Paint the house ..
You know TLK - the paint sometimes doesn't dry on that and you don't see it because it filled with paint stains from a previous job - when you drag it across room sometimes it leaves a mark. (my experience).
Plus when you use it again - dry paints chips everywhere. But definately an environment friendly solution than using all the plastic.
