Distribution of Zakat

Since its the Ramadan, and I assume it being a common practice that Zakaat is given in this holy month. So have you people paid your zakaat for this year? And how do you do that? Send away the money to some charity, or find some poor families to help with he said money. Or just as its common here in Pakistan, that poor women would come to you in hope to be helped, and you circulate your zakaat from home, helping whoever comes and asks for it. Or maybe yours is some other way, more inspiring and enlightening which could inspire the common lot.

Please share, and no, its not going to take away your sawaab, it is in the hadeeth that fard ibadaat should be performed openly (as to inspire others) and nafl ibadaat should be performed secretly, as not to show off.

Jazak Allah.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

it doesn't have to be in the month of Ramadhan but yes it's widely practiced as this reminds people of the dues and it helps the poor for the eid preparations...people are more religious during this month than any other month.

i wasn't saaHib-e-nisaab when i was a young man in India...so when i got my first job and started saving...i use the month i started making money and that was in the month of September :) for me it works well.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

I have already given out a major portion of our zakat. It went to couple of poor families back home that we know.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

Ma sha Allah that you are sahib e nisaab now. I havent heard honestly that unmarried people pay zakat too. My limited knowledge! So how do you spend your Zakaat now?

Re: Distribution of Zakat

what? you serious?

Re: Distribution of Zakat

Ma sha Allah. Thats very nice. So to you its basically like one or two families but better help i.e. bigger amount of zakaat, right?

I am a little torn between the two. A part of me wants to help one family but substantially, paying them only. But then there are so many , needy and yet too God fearing to ask from anyone. What if we help a little, but help as many as we can?

Re: Distribution of Zakat

In an ideal society, if we all go by the recommendation of shariah and take care of the people closest to us first, almost everyone will be taken care of. I know we all want to help as many as we can, but its better to s tart with one family at a time. Its just my personal opinion.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

I for sure am. Maybe have n’t that much an exposure of life. By people I meant men basically, since i dont think many single save enough before getting married to pay zakaat. They just save enough to get married and then, all saving and every thing goes pooof. Well I dont know. I already confessed my limited knowledge

Re: Distribution of Zakat

makes sense.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

i do research and i give money secretly to people who are in need and who do NOT ask for help like some professional do...it's strange to me that how so many people give zakaat to a few well know so called 'poor' people in your native city.

my father had told me when i was 9 years old that those who do NOT ask and you know their condition, you have to help them and help them secretly so even your left hand doesn't know about it...and, i follow his advice...i go to the cities i've lived and to my village and i help them directly! alHamdolillah, i'm satisfied.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

yes...closet to you...including your siblings BUT NOT including your parents...your parents are your responsibility so Zakaat can NOT be given to Parents.

however, i do NOT help people i know closely with zakaat money because it may be embarassing to them if they ever find out...i help them with money i set aside for Sadaqaaat...mostly, helping people with treatment back home.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

Ma sha Allah and Jazak Allah.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

Oh but I thought zakaat or sadaqa/ khairaat, your relatives are the most deserving firsts.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

And I dont think one even needs to "tell" them what money it is. One does this for Allah's sake, with the purpose of helping someone. And those that need it, would have their self esteem intact as they didnt really go and ask for it. its like Allah sent the help. Thats all about it. If someone has an ego problem genuinely, thats something else. I would always believe relatives are the best deserving. Then neighbours, and then the needy in general (ofcourse those who deserve to be helped).

Re: Distribution of Zakat

yes...but NOT parents...if you have just the Zakaat money then you must give that money to your closest ones first...but, if you have other money as well, then you may consider giving money from sadaaqaat fund to your closest ones first then use zakaat money...it's my way of giving zakaat and sadaaqaat...it's NOT religiously binding at all.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

Peace mirage,

All things belong to Almighty Allah, and wealth is therefore held by human beings in trust. The original meanong of the word Zakat is both 'purification' and ' growth'. Giving Zakat means 'giving a specified percentage on certain properties to certain classess of needy people'. Those properties which held in our possesion for one lunar year means if we paid our Zakat in last year in the month of ramadhan and in this year in the same month of ramadhan if one lunar year passed than 'Zakat' is obligatory on those properties which are in our possession.

Zakat may only be paid to the eight categories mentioned in the Qur'an Chapter 9 Verse 60. Other than that a person may also give as much as he/she pleases as voluntary alms or charity.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

you do NOT have to TELL them but you know our culture...people try to hurt intentionally by their words...there have been instances where i gave money to a close relative from my Sadaqa fund but this other jeaolous person spread the rumor and told that person that i gave the zakaat to him and he was a bit embarrassed about that.

so, just to be on the safe side...!!!!

Re: Distribution of Zakat

Thats a very valuable post. I think I need to go check Quraan Chapter 9, verse 60. Jazak Allah.

Re: Distribution of Zakat

Thats just sad but very true. I have seen where people (who could afford, gave their zakaat for the marriage of a couple of orphan girls, but the relatives never missed a chance to remind them (who received the help) that their marriages could be possible only because of someone’s “help”. I dont think such deeds bear much fruit. :hinna:
