distinction Potohari vs mirpuri

They are not the same. This isn’t up for discussion.

I am a proud islo/pindian, potohari is spoken with gusto and pride in those regions. It is not Urdu  But I am proud to say we speak that too. If I can diffrentiate between that and tapori.. then why is it so difficult to lend a careful ear in this direction.

Not that there is anything wrong with Mirpuri as a language. In fact, I think all kids should speak it cause they sound adoreable. Its about the extending the politeness of understanding.

Talk about divide and conquer though. Cause y’all is Pakis. Innit

Re: distinction Potohari vs mirpuri

well hitchki, you come to terms with your mothertongue in your own time. in the meantime just say you are italian or something else

what is refered to as mirpuri or pahari or potohari is the same language.

Re: distinction Potohari vs mirpuri

My madari-zubaan, as as like to say it is Urdu. Because that is the language from which our freedom was concieved. Everything else is just gravy.

But even gravy has flavours, right? ..and I guess only a conissuer can diffrentiate between Masa and Yo sushi. Apologies for the overestimation of my fellow net-freaks.

The* lahnda *dialects of Punjabi (Mirpuri, Hindko, Western-Punjabi, Jakati, Khetrani, Pahari/Potwari, Seraiki) are very beautiful.

Majhi dialect is also quite nice.

The only Punjabi dialect I don't find palatable is southern Punjabi (rural Jhangvi dialect), very rough for my tastes.

I can't really tell the difference between Potwari and Mirpuri but I do find that my friends from Gujar-Khan did better at school than my friends from Mirpur even though they speak very similar.

Lifestyle is also a bit different, the Gujar-Khani families are a lil more refined than the Mirpuri ones but that might not be true in all cases, this is just based on what I have observed.

Re: distinction Potohari vs mirpuri

geordie and scouse are languages? and they have more differences then your example

i appreciate all attempts to jump ship but please jump ship rather then take the ship and throw the mirpuri mirpuris offboard as the only paindus in town

Re: distinction Potohari vs mirpuri

I can speak Potowari and Lahori Punjabi very well.....because my Father was from Potohar area and my Mother was from Lahore, it helps me get along with Lahoris as well as Potohari people and my Urdu is also quite good because it's my first language....need to learn Pushto and Sindhi. I can also understand Mirpuri because it's similar to Potowari and also Saraiki because it's similar to Gurmukhi Punjabi.

what is gurmukhi punjabi?

I wanted to write fusha/thait Punjabi....gurmukhi came out by mistake.

Nosherwan,

Whats lahnda.

Re: distinction Potohari vs mirpuri

Geordie is a language, Scouse is just noise. Awful noise.

I agree with what Hitchki said, youse are all brownies...six and two threes.

I though your madari zabaan was Pothohari. Madari zaban in Urdu literally means your mother's language. Are you saying your mother is Urdu speaking.

In Pakistan Urdu is the qaumi zabaam, the national language. But it is only the madari zaban of the 20 million or so Urdu speakers in Pakistan and about a hundred million in India.

On the Pothahari question, the language the Mirpuris speak is called Potohari. There is no such thing as a Mirpuri language.

You're partly right, Mirpuris have different dialect of Potowari like Faisalabadis and Mianwali people have different dialect of Punjabi and Urdu speaking people have different dialects like haidrabadi and dehli dakan etc.

Lahnda languages - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I don’t classify them as seperate from Punjabi..

To me Hindko, Potwari, Seraiki etc. together with Majhi, Doabi etc. are all dialects of Punjabi.

Re: distinction Potohari vs mirpuri

Nosh,

Cheers.

Here is what Wiki says about Mirpuri dialect.

Mirpur Punjabi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mirpur Punjabi or Punjabi Mirpuri is a language spoken in Pakistan. It is a Lahnda language closely related to the Western Punjabi language.
It is essentially an extension of the Potwari language which is spoken from the an area that corresponds from Rawalpindi across the northern areas of the Punjab through to Azad Kashmir, and has been used to refer to the overlapping range of Western Punjabi (Lahnda) and Western Pahari languages including Potwari/Potohari/Pindiwali (Mirpuri), Hindko (Southern Mirpuri), Kangri-Dogri (Northern Mirpuri). It is given prominence by commentators due to the large numbers of people who are resident in the United Kingdom who originate from this area of Pakistan.

So if I am right, western dialects of Punjabi are also known as Lahnda. To be honest, know one has ever mentioned this word before.

In the UK, the Gujarkhani/Jhelumi do feel that they are different from the Mirpuris, and Chachi definetely feel different from the Mirpuri. But I suspect this got more to do with history, then real cultural diffrences. The western Patwaris were placed in the Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir, while the eastern lot were made part of Punjab.

But I still don’t get why some Mirpuris call themselves Kashmiri, when they have no connection what so ever with Kashmir. Call yourselves Mirpuri, and no one would criticise you.

thank u very much! isnt it just disturbing wen us potoharis get called mirpuris :aj:

I get when someone says he/she is american or pakistani or chinese, coz they belong to a certain country but its absolutely disgusting to label people by their race, their last names, their position in the hemisphere e.g. indian people are not really fond of their fellow nationals from the south! So all u sur-phire brit pakis who are not so fond of people from a city called mirpur, you guys are disgusting.

And before someone makes a smart a$$ comment, i'm not from mirpur, i dont even know where it is in Pakistan.

And WTH does potohari mean?? Either call everyone living in Pakistan a pakistani or don't say anything at all.

^
You are right we shouldn't generalise and be racist.

I find we Asians are very racist and intolerant (regardless of whether we're Muslim, Sikh, Liberal, Fundo, Punjabi, Arab, Gujarati)... We can learn a thing or two from white ppl...

There's nothing wrong with identifying as Punjabi, Pashtun, Gujji etc. because simply Indian or Pakistani are just blanket vague terms without any cultural/ethnic significance, it's like calling someone European but we shud remember we're all equal and we all have our flaws.

Stop hating and dividing ppl.

No point scapegoating each other, that just aggravates the problem, we're all responsible for our fcuked up state.

Huma,

So if we meet an American, who says he's Texan, would you call him racist.

Are you sure you are a Paki. Every Paki knows what a Potohari is. Basically, if you read the opening message, the girl said she is from Islamabad. People from Islamabad and the neighbouring town are Potoharis. I take it you don't know what a Karachiwala is or what a Lahori is either.

And how has not knowing where Mirpur is make you a liberal. Find out where it is, because its an important settlement in Pakistan.

Your ignorance about Pakistan surprises me, especially as our capital is in Potohar. Its not some obscure region like Gwadar or South Waziristan.

Re: distinction Potohari vs mirpuri

well personally i find them both stupid with all the aap tum tu nonsense. its a language that has the caste system mentality built right into it.
