Distance Learning in the UAE

does anyone here know of any universities in the UAE or KSA, offering distance learning or external candidate admissions (those who are not required to attend regular university classes)?

i’m looking for degree courses specifically in history/ islamic history.

also if you know of such courses anywhere in the gulf region where one can get admission while living in the UAE.

i checked the VU and AIOU of Pakistan also, they do not have enough information on their website. If you know something about VU/AIOU on this subject, please do share.

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

Aceones, I dont know of any such Uni, but I think google can surely get you some info.

I had received this link from someone sometimes back, just see if it can be of any help for you:

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

thnx for the links...

i did google before opening this thread, and found some info, most prominent of the unies in the UAE on the subject seems to be Sharjah Universities dept of arts, but they did not mention anything about non-regular admissions. i'll have to check with them personally which is not possible at least in coming weeks.

and Dr. bilal's uni which you mentioned above is offering more like a full-time islamic studies program, which i cannot take up at this time,

i'm looking for something which i could do in spare time but with a little more formal touch to it... lets see if someone else has anything to share

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

^ Can I ask you something? why you want to have a degree in this subject? Are you going for any teaching job etc?

I was also once thinking to do some course/degree in islamic studies etc but being that my current job keeps me hell busy i cannot even imagine to join something like on full time basis.

so i thought i can read up books on the subject in my spare time. All i want is to have some knowledge and even degree cannot guarantee that to you.

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

^ exactly the same reason which you have up there...
i don't really want to take up any teaching job (not at least in foreseeable future)

i do read up whatever comes my way on this subject, as a hobby i must say, but most of the time i find things mixed up and not taking any proper shape... that's why i thought may be a properly built degree program and compulsion to read the material in a specific order within time with necessity to remember it with all the references (important for exams) might help, because most of the time i fail to give correct references and explaining things in the right way... so that's why

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

hmmm i understand. I guess you should first look for authentic books/authors. Start from their books. Join some library and make a habit of going there at least on weekends. There are some very nice book shops who give you tea/coffee options too along with sitting arrangement. LIke we have one in Abu Dhabi Mall.

if you cannot go to a library , look for online books. sometimes you get very good material on sites like scribd.com.

I am just giving you info whatever is coming to my mind, otherwise obviously go for what you like. I ll see if i could find any more info on online uni thing.

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

why don't you try UK universities? There are more than few offering distance learning courses.

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

thnx for the commendations... that's what i always do whenever i get some time for myself

as a side note, uni does not have to be "an online university" at all, rather i would prefer a proper university which could conduct the exams (may be with physical presence), recommend and govern the course material, and provide any consultation when needed... most likely the way VU and AIOU operate.

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

because i cannot travel to UK to sit in an exam, and because i think it will be comparatively easier to discuss with the teachers face to face if needed here in the UAE.

or perhaps i must say i've not properly explored this possibility yet

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

I am not too sure if you want a degree only or can opt for a diploma as well. I have done a diploma in Middle Eastern Culture Studies from Florida International University through my university (American University in Dubai). You sit all the classes and exams in Dubai only in AUD but for the diploma you have a choice of getting it either from FIU or AUD. I opted for FIU. Middle Eastern Culture Studies encompasses Islamic History, Middle Eastern History amongst other things. It is a well rounded diploma program, if you are interested.

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

interesting! thanks for the info. looks like its a fulltime program you are talking about. as i said in first post, i'm looking for some course to do in spare time, where i dont need to attend any classes, just take some guidance about course and give exams.

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

Yes sorry unfortunately I did forget to mention that it is full time. However, if you change your mind, I think this is worth doing.

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

Check Preston Uni Ajman. They offer Bachelor and Masters degree in Islamic Studies.

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

I see my reply doesn’t count eh? :bummer:

Re: Distance Learning in the UAE

Talked to them… though they said I am illegible to take admission in their Masters Program in Islamic Studies (with history as an option, not as major) without any background of Islamic Studies/ History, but they are not offering any external/ distance learning program.

Their semester is starting by the end of September, if anybody is interested…
