Have you ever gone to a website that asks for your email address? (haven’t we all). You know that the moment you type it in, it is streaming across the net on its way to every spam database in the world. You simply can’t be that careless with your personal email address.
You don’t need to sign-up. You just make it up on the spot. Pick [email protected] or [email protected] — pick anything you want. Later, come to this site and check that account. Its that easy. Mailinator accounts are created when mail arrives for them. No signup, no personal information, and when you’re done — you can walk away — an instant solution to one way spammers get your address. It’s an anti-spam solution for everyone. Your temporary email account will be automatically deleted for you after a few hours.
I tried out the service and I liked it. At least this saves me the hassle of generating other accounts solely for the purpose of junk mail and maintaining them.
So basically from what I can understand, you visit the website and have it generate an email address for you that you submit to dubious sites. Then you come back and type in the previously generated email address in the box to access junk mail.
It’s a little different than mailinator but same principle of “useless registration hassle” applies. What happens is that people post common username and passwords to popular sites like washingtonpost.com or nytimes.com on bugmenot. So then you can use this site to find a valid login without remembering your own or going through the painfully slow registration process.
BTW there’s an aweomse bugmenot firefox extension out there as well
1- hard to remember autogenerated id at mailinator.com
2- sometimes you need to reset passwd on websites, how would you visit their confirmation link when the address you used to register is already expired?
3- not all websites being maintained by idiots, what if someday it becomes a trend to ban @mailinator.com and similar domains for signup?
4- i think an account on yahoo or hotmail dedicated for registrations and trash is rather better solution. and who says it's hard to maintain a junk email account? just login once in 25-30 days and empty inbox... junk folders are usually emptied automatically..
India’s on the 2nd place for sending spam mails to mailinator server:
Subject: **hard pleasure ** IP address: 202.56.221.42 DNS Name: 202.56.221.42 Location: Indore, IN Emails: 3500
on the first place is Cupertino, CA, US, with 3600 spam mails. Subject: New Music Tuesday: Black Eyed Peas, Depeche Mode,… IPaddress: 17.254.6.7 DNS Name:chatbox-smtp-out2.apple.com Location: Cupertino, CA, US Emails: 3600
Some valid points raised, but I see myself using it for sites where I don't have to worry about remembering the password and it's a one time download/visiting thing. I'd rather use mailinator than another dedicated email address.
For instance, I had to install an Adhan software and it required giving an email address for it just for the heck of it. Instead of writing my actual email address down I got one from mailinator. I also see myself using it for downloading installing RealPlayer/ZoneAlarm where the emails received aren't of much use.
