I'm not sure how useful this bit of news is, but heard in a talk show recently that GoP is unable to provide electricity not because of the shortage of capacity but rather because IMF has stringent conditions. One of which is that Pakistan will reduce the amount of imported crude oil. Which is also used to run Power generation stations, if I understand correctly.
Pakistan's electricity producing capacity has always been surplus, it's the required components to reach that number which have been bottlenecked due to economic reasons.
How true all of that is, I'm not really sure. But sounds logical. It'd be nice if GoP could just come out and give public the core facts and truth, and take the public in confidence over the essential matters. It would greatly serve to reduce public frustration and make people want to strive to avoid IMF and be self-sufficient in the future.

The government can't do that. They can't admit they've borrowed more money and added more to the public debt than any other government in the history of Pakistan.

if you remember..Loadshedding has been over since december 2009....
it is not what they said, it is what they are doing... look at the news once again and you'll find that that PEPCO spokesperson is saying that Govt has now instructed them to provide furnace oil to all Power generation plant.. this could have done in 2008 & 09 and 10 but Govt didn't wanted to provide any relief to people.. but now elections are only year and half away... they have decided to donate some electricity to Pakistanies as well...

Despite a decrease in the electricity shortfall, no reduction was made in load shedding duration.
*According to Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO), the electricity production jumps up to 14,563 megawatt while the demand is 15,073 megawatt that leaves a shortfall of only 510 megawatt. *
The water resources are producing 5,519 megawatt, whereas thermal power production is delivering 1,910 megawatt of electricity.
The Independent Power Producers are generating 7,036 megawatt.
*Despite the fact that the gap between demand and supply has shrunk to only 510 megawatt, no relaxation was made in electricity load shedding. *
The power outage is varying between 10 hours a day in the urban areas and 16 hours a day in the rural areas.

baton se bijli banti tou Pakistan abtak 10000 times export kar raha hota! fact is they know how to tell lies nothing else, mega projects require mega minds with some degree of intelect to execute project. Their minds stops at how to make money transferred to own accounts and how to get perks as minister, they dont actually beleive in working if you are in government! make sure you dont elect such idiots again!

Thank you IMF if they did that as not only can't Pakistan, and it hasn't in the past, been able to foot the entire bill but RPPs are a sure way of getting kickbacks on the side. It is a reason that PPP with Mr. 10% running things, be it now or in the nineties, always LOVE the RPPs but shut down kalabagh and any other dams to "build a consensus" ;)

Loadshedding to continue till 2018: WAPDA

ISLAMABAD: **Chairman WAPDA Shakeel Durrani said that electricity loadshedding will continue till 2018, Geo News reported. **Meanwhile member of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Water and Power, Sajjadul Hasan has called for riots in Okara and the burning of PEPCO’s office to protests against loadshedding.
The committee met today and Sajjadul Hasan informed the members that 22 hours of loadhsedding in Okara is unbearable.

anyone had a chance to listen to our president's pearls of wisdom..? even in London the electricity goes but no media highlights that...
apart from that, i can say abt my area away from faisalabad where its 14-16 hours of load shedding, may b coz its rural area, .
the high prices are result of so many factors but three factors stand out
1- IPP's (Independent Power plants which were brought in older govt era. u know who.
2- RPP's (Rental PPs) of famous Raja Pervez Ashraf
3- Corruption

Even in Lahore the load shedding ranges between 8 hours to 14 hours, its not in the rural areas alone, besides I personally think that Punjab is being hit hard deliberately
