dinner disasters.

Dinner at a family friend’s house. One of the dishes was bhaingan.
Small ones, lubed up with spices and served whole.
They were really unpleasant.
The host put two on my plate, and she is one of those desis who do the whole ‘eat it, eat it, you must eat it, eat it now’ thing.
So I tried to be clever, I’ll not make that mistake again. I nimbly wrapped one of the bhaingans up in a tissue, and hid it on my lap. To deposit in the bin later. However, it rolled off my lap. The host’s four year old kid saw it and crawled under the table to fetch it. It was all pretty embarrassing.

Have you had any mishaps, either as host or guest?

Re: dinner disasters.

well thats one reason i dont force my gusets and also i don tput food in their plats , i just offer them dish and if they feel like eating it they can take how much they want. bcz i dont know they may not like something i cook .
ok one more question came into my mind , how do u know if people like yur food or no.
u just simply should have told that lady that u dont eat baingan. i first try put small quantity and if i like i can take more. dont want to be in situation where host put stuff on my plate and i dont feel like eating it. i will just leave it in plate.

Re: dinner disasters.

^ I usually like bhaingan, just didn't like these. :(
Would have gone ahead and eaten them anyway but they were actually making me gag. I know, she went to all that trouble, I'm awful.

I think if people finish their plates, perhaps ask for more, and they don't look as if they're about to throw up, then you can safely assume they liked your food.

Re: dinner disasters.

 What happened after he went to retrieve the scorned baingan? Did he show it to mommy?

I would have made it look like he was trying to steal the delicious baingan away from me. Nosy kids should be taught a lesson…(feed him the BAINGAN!!!) :hehe:

Re: dinner disasters.

Haha, yeah, the nosy little tyke.
His mother asked what he was holding and he held out the offending bhaingan. I mumbled that it was mine, and there was a brief moment of awkwardness and then we laughed it off.

Re: dinner disasters.

You should have said that you liked 'em so much and were planning to take some back home as a mid night snack :hehe:

Re: dinner disasters.

:omg: … yeah I had a disaster once .. at a dinner party , very formal setting , guests enjoying the food and I didnt even realize when i dozed ! they heard my khrrata’s and then humbly offered me to take a nap in the room :frowning: … cant face the host family till date

Re: dinner disasters.

ohhh and not to forget , once at a dinner dawat , the host’s 16 year old , who had a reputation for being rude and being a teen  .. so she was sitting right next to me on the table. I was in the process of eating the aloo’s in my plate .. and one of them was so hard , I tried to cut it in half with my fork and the next thing i know , it went flying into the teen’s lap :hayaa: .. she freaked out and then took her plate and off she went to the other room ! the host tried to make up for her daughter’s behaviour and instead sat at the seat next to me … and guesss what .. few minutes later another aloo flew from my plate and into her lap :smack: … needless to say , I decided never to have aloo at their place ever again :snooty:

Re: dinner disasters.

:frowning: you guys are laughing at my misery :crying:

PS .. just being dramatic . the incidents were worth laughing for :omg: … the host at whose table i felt asleep and dared to khrata as well , always laughs at me when i am at her place … even after 12 months of the incident she cant believe her food was so boring , it made me go to sleep :naraz:

Re: dinner disasters.

didnot happened with me. but once in pak i went to this park where this couple bought gol gappay and they sat down on the grass. the next thing i saw was all of their gol gappay flying in the air and them two tryna catch it since it was very windy that day. haha

Re: dinner disasters.

:omg: blessed , i cant stop laughing at the thought of them tryng to catch the flying gapa’s :omg:

on that thought one of the worst things to happen is when you stop by the icecream machine at the market , get the guy to make you a large cone … and as soon as you lick it once the cream falls off and you are left with the cone in your hand … embaaaarassing

Re: dinner disasters.

:omg:

ive only had it once i think, some kid had put their plate with chicken on the sofa i was sitting at, i had just gone up to get some food too and when i came back, i didnt notice the plate so i sat on it :bummer: thank god it wasn’t something ‘sauce-y’ so i kind of got away with it, i dont think anyone noticed lol

Re: dinner disasters.

yes, I metioned it in my blog. I was offered chicken and veg curry and rice. What I got was plain rice (fine) a paste made of turnips and swede (eww) and 1 chicken neck (double eww) I could not eat it.
I really dislike rice pudding, but every time I go to this one friends house I am always served it, it's very annoying because I have known her for over 10 years and she still gives it to me and I never ever eat it.

Re: dinner disasters.

maybe she is passing a message for you not to come back ..

Re: dinner disasters.

She always cooks my favourite meat dishes, I think she only knows how to make 1 type of pudding.
