Do any of you know how to cook a different cuisine? And by that I mean…actively learned how to make authentic Italian/Chinese/Thai/Mexican/Greek etc food?..Like how quite a few people never use shan/laziza/national masalas, there’s much more to cooking different cuisines than readymade/prepackaged foods available at the grocery store.
I work with a Jordanian lady who is the most amazing cook! She started a food blog by our request, so I've been using her recipes for authentic middle eastern food...it's so delish! So far I've made Shish Barak, Fattah de jaj, and authentic, made from scratch falafel! So yummy!!!

I took some italian cooking class when I was studying in rome. I can still make better tiramisu than most available here, and make a few italian specialties from scratch, including home made pasta, sauces, and all. although I have not made it in some time.

bah olive garden is horrid, you can find better recipes. i can give u some good tuscan recipes if you like
on another note, its funny..some ppl are surprised when they see real italian cuisine that its not huge bowls filled wit pasta and dripping with sauce. :)

Unfortunately I cannot make any authentic cuisine. Even my desi cooking is tainted with convenience and shortcuts. Sigh.

I bought this Thai green curry "dinner kit"......I didn't read the directions before buying, to my surprise, it was done in 2 minutes in hte microwave. Didn't taste very..umm...good? So it made me wonder and ask this question.

I don't know any other cuisine as well as Indian/Pakistani, however if I am trying a different cuisine, I'll always make the food from scratch. I don't use pre-mixed spices and sauces if I can help it, of course sometimes you just need to to make life easier.

My sister did learn authentic Chinese cooking some 20 years back and we all suffered ![]()
Specially in early days of her classes. We not only had to eat whatever she cooked, we had to praise that too. Ammi alerted us (2 brothers) heads up that ‘behen itni mehnat sai banatee hai, zara mun khool deya karoo’ ![]()

My landlord is Italian so she is always giving me homemade Italian sauces and of course the recipes. I LOVE italian food. She also has some really good italian recipe books that she let me borrow.

I make a few dishes here and there from different cuisines like paella (spanish), risotto (italian), moussaka (greek), green bean casserole (american i guess).
Btw if you ladies haven't tried moussaka, you should - it's divine!!

^ Agree, moussaka is amazing. Greek food in general is amazing.
My mom makes loads of awesome things, and I've picked them up over the years. Greek, Turkish, Bosnian, Middle-Eastern food in general (tabbouleh, baba ghanouj, shwarma, falafel etc) ... ermmm... not really into Asian foods, so haven't experimented much. I think one needs to have a real taste for authentic Asian food bcos it's nothing like the chicken manchurian and the chow mein we get at the restaurants. There's a restaurant called L2o here that we went to, and I had shabu shabu, which is a Japanese way of cooking/eating. They basically give you a seafood broth and uncooked cuts of very high-quality fish, you cook it in the broth for 2 mins and you're served with this ramen-noodle type side and wasabi. And the ramen noodle thing tastes nothing like ramen noodles. It's an explosion of flavor in your mouth - it's like eating the sea. =/ We've made sushi loads of times.
Also, with Italian cooking, it's really all about simple fresh ingredients. There's less sauce and more olive oil + basil + tomato combos in true Italian cuisine, imo. Loads of veggies. Anyhoo.

I can make desi food without Shaan packages.
Recently I have taken up to learn arabic food, but it does happen that I add chili in something which didnt need it. I guess thats the desi in me, khaane mein mirch toh honi chaiye ;)

The shabu shabu at the restaurant. I enjoy saying shabu shabu. Yeah.
L2o is a great restaurant btw, if anyone is ever in Chicago. 3 Michelin stars, too, if you’re on a Michelin restaurant hunt.
