Re: Differences between FOB and Foreign Born Desi guys.....
^ am not so sure about that...
I know there are many that aren't but the number seems to be proportionally higher in Pakistan, in my experience. Whenever I've been to Pak, most of my cousins (both male and female) and watched Bollywood movies, songs or trailers whenever they sat in front of the TV... and Bollywood was always a major topic of discussion there. So obviously that might not necessarily be true for the population as whole but this is what I've observed.
edit-
I know everybody hates generalising here ........but there is got to be some general traits that differentiate FOBs from Foreign Born Desi Guys...
What do you mean by fob guys though? What's the exact definition?

Whenever i have been to Pakistan, none of my cousins had any interest in Bollywood. Not only my cousins, also the neighbours and their friends, nobody bothers about Bollywood.
Meanwhile here in the west in the town i am living, almost every Pakistani (girls and guys) are bollywood fan.
So this whole observing matter gives biased results.
I agree, people in Pakistan do watch Bollywood (not all).
And if you observe it in numbers, its obvious that in Pakistan there will be more bollywood loving Pakistanis than there will be in foreign countries. But thats because there are more Pakistanis in Pakistan.
I agree with Sara516. Other than accent, i cannot think of anything else right now.
Re: Differences between FOB and Foreign Born Desi guys…
Sara516. The abbreviation FOB is invented by british pakistanis for pakistani nationals and it spells ‘Fresh off The Boat’…
My observation is that pakistani nationals are more familiar with pakistani cultures and norms in comparison to thier british counterparts or bbcd’s (british born confused desis) as they are sometimes addressed by the pakistanis.
Although I am very close to my well educated father…I also have a ‘FOB’ cousin here in london that migrated 3 years back, and the fact is that my father and he and can have conversations in thier own language (pujabi) and socialize in ways that they could leaves myself feeling many a time almost dumb and left out .
However I must say that my cousin hasnt got a green card and its related freedom yet..and because my father and his brothers efforted and expended greatly on calling him over he is always under obligation to do anything that they ask of him.
He is here to work and send back money to his middle class family back home and he is not contemplating starting a family or buyig his own property here because hes well aware of the high costs of living in the west that would leave little to return to his needy family (which also comprise sisters of marriageable age) back home. Because he still has not got a green card and its corresponding priviliges and as his work permit is expiring, he is now in a desperate situation and is planning on resorting to marrying any desi girl in order to get the ‘marriage stay’…and he is not giving much thought to whether there s compatibility/mutual likeness and rather he is concerned about his foremost goal which is the green card and from the looks of it if there is any culture clash kind of thing…i doubt he will strive greatly to sustain the marriage. Also he knows that once he has this ‘golden goose’ that he has instantly quadrapled his appeal as a marriage potential back home therefore it wouldnt an issue for him to get remarried and to a girl of his ideal preferance from home.
Moreover, our cousin lived with us for the first few months and on getting a job he tried moving out of town but whenever he gets that dreaded call he has to succumb to our service…after all we did spent sleepless nights and thousands of pounds getting him here…

incorrect, the term FOB was neither invented by brit paks nor was it invented for Recent arrivals. it existed prior to being used by anyone with anything to do with Pakistan.
and lastly the term used by Britpaks is Freshie for the recent arrivals :)
Re: Differences between FOB and Foreign Born Desi guys.....
in the end the difference boils down to socioeconomic background
let me use UK as an example and give you 2 different side of the spectrums for both groups, and then there is everyone in between. The question then becomes which type of person along that continuum are we running into.
UK local-
A) one end- well settled educated, professional families, children graduated from good unis, in good careers, living in good areas
B) other end- blue collared workers who came from rural areas of Pakistan, not into integrating with locals, not into education, living in slums, often on the dole, involved in gangs, crime, crap like 'honour killing" some into uber right winger groups.
Recent arrivals:
C) one end- kids of wealthy families in Pakistan, gone to top schools there, attending decent to great unis here, living in good areas etc
D) other end- people of very poor backgrounds, with minimal education or mediocre education, working odd jobs, living in desi ghettos,
and then you have everyone in between in terms of demographic and behavioral patterns.
Re: Differences between FOB and Foreign Born Desi guys.....
^ My dad wasn't foreign born but he moved to England before high school, he's pretty typically Asian as in he likes all the classical music and sitar and stuff, it doesn't mean he isn't a 60's mod jamming to The Beatles and what not but he loves talking about Pakistani politics and all the stuff uncles talk about in Pakistan. He's not very good with very sophisticated urdu but he'll watch documentaries on Allama Iqbal and stuff.
So yeah, it isn't always the case :)

Re: Differences between FOB and Foreign Born Desi guys…
there is no difference:snooty:
seriously there isnt any i wouldnt even say so-called “F.O.Bs” have accents cuz a lot of my cousins and their friends in Pakistan dont have accents …so that generalization is out the window
you cant say someone so called F.O.B may like bollywood or what not cuz that cud be true of the guys here too…
i just dont think you can make any generalization on a so called FOB that would not be applicable to a foreign born desi guy …except one
the foreign born desi guy was not born in pakistan …DUH!
