Dietary Variety for Infants

Salaam All,

I need some help with feeding my infant, M/A he’s now 10 months.
I normally boil chicken or lamb and add some sort of a Gerber veggie and purée.
He’s grown out of that so now I’ve started to put a tad bit of salt and bay leaf in the water to boil the meat and started to cook up fresh veggies. He’s also grown out of that.

He’s at the stage where he wants to eat everything himself. Problem being more of it ends up on the floor then his tummy. And there are only so many veggies that I can dice up. I only can think of Potatoes, celery. peas and carrots.

And he’s crawling now so he’s more active - eating less and loosing weight.
I’m looking for some creative but most important HEALTHY ways to feed him.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

u can give him sabut dana (havent a clue what its called in english),

porridge made with some chicken or lamb stock if u want savoury or in milk and sugar if u want sweet

kichri

pulao

i dont know if u will be willing to go for it, but by 8 months, babies in my familiy are eating whatver grown ups are :D so we alter the spices and tone them down a bit.

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

awesome khawa thanks will try the first suggestion.

He can't have rice because he's got major mucus issues so until those are completley squared away I can't do that. :(

He eats our food too but the spices are a bit to much for him.
And as far as I know (could be wrong) - I think the baby foods have more nutritient value vs our greesy oil based salans and junk.

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

why are u eating greasy salans eh? apna khana sahi karo! hehe

ya if he has mucus.. then stay away from rice. and banana. and cucumber. and orange juice.

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

Muniya, get the little pastas. Make them extra tender and add little chicken pieces and pasta sauce.

Pasta with butter.

Cucumber too? he loves them!!!! :(

*Nikki * brilliant idea; I'd brought some couscous and was gonna make that with broth and carrots.

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

and *nikki *- since he needs to eat with his own fingers the food has to be cold or luke warm -- will pasta taste okay that way?

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

also i dunno if its a desi thing, but supposedly the "asar" of boiled rice changes when mad einto say a pilao or fried.....it isnt so bad then for congestion/chest the way boiled rice is.

Those were good suggestions: kichiri, pilao with soft tender chunks of chicken/veggies. Get him to eat pieces of whole wheat bread...maybe boiled brocolli trees, make soft pasta for him, and add zuccini or other veggie puree to the suace so that he gets veggies that way as well. Hmm. I dont think roti/salen is such a bad thing, just cut back on the oil you use to cook. Plus you want him to get used to the foods you eat on a daily basis...so slowly get him acquainted. That way you won't be making 2 things each day like I do, one for adults and one for baby......

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

he loves his wheat pita so thats a good thing ..

I never thought of zuchini and broc.

See I love this place!!

thanks ladies!

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

*pasta pieces cooked soft like spirals, shells with butter or touch of sauce should be fine lukewarm. Also can boil pasta in stock for flavor.
*boil carrot pieces and serve him small diced chunks
* same with brocolli
* maybe grilled cheese cut up into bite size pieces
*try "dallia" (not sure of english name..barley?) boiled in chicken/beef stock
* make farina with chicken stock (sooji) or make soft halwa...and its actually good for kid just use less sugar
*little chunks of soft cheese, even cheddar
*offer him crackers for crunch
*Cheesecake :)

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

cheesecake :nono: sharam karo! Mera bacha mota karna hai?!

He no like the cheeses - he’s the lactose intolerant kid remember

I’m really gonna try that dalia stuff

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

bachay ko cheesecake na do, MUJHAY dedo nah....ooh and fry it plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

again I say Moti!

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

Have you tried Baby Mum-Mums? They are biscuits that dissolve in the mouth, so easy for babies to eat, even if they don't have any teeth. It's a good snack.

My son won't eat blended meats ... he likes actual botis from salans. So I just mush it up and he seems to like it. Pulao as well as kichari. Oh, and he eats paapay too. A true Pakistani baby I guess. He also likes barfi and gulab jaman. :D

Whatever veggies I give him must be mixed with fruit or pasta. He won't eat veggies alone.

My sister likes mashed up bananas and also weetabix.

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

muniya, if he likes having finger food.. maybe make some homemade chicken nuggets.. my daughter always loved those (still does) and they are not messy either.

also, you can get baby muesli bars or fruit bars.. he might like those?

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

Cucumber is a 'cold' food item so a no no if baby has congestion and is mucussy.

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

mehnaz yeh we have those snacks here too he loves them but in the end of the day they are still snacks. KNow what I mean?

sadz I always got the idea that the chicken nuggets are healthy since they are fried? I could be wrong -- or can I bake them maybe?

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

he can have aloo keema too.

peas and keema

introduce roti to him if u guys make it at home.

make shorbay wali chicken, and rip roti into pcs and pt in shorba.. roti will soak shorba up. kids love to eat that.

but i agree with afro.. tone down spices in ure own food (but dont cut them out, its a desi baby, will havta learn to get along with them). and let baby eat what ure eating. it will be so easy for u too, to not have to make 2 sep items and u dont want a kid that grows up to say mirchay hai mirchay hai in everything :D

u can make kebabs for him too. baked in oven.

Re: Dietary Variety for Infants

Khawateen, even though I tried to get her used to desi khanas, in the beginning she would eat a chicken leg from salan, now since she is going to gora KG, she has stopped eating hot spices, so even if she is having rice, like palou, she takes it with yoghurt, so that its mild, not easy to get kids used to our spices.
