I think these days MILs are quite generous and they usually ask before buying lehnga or anything, couple of friends got married few months ago and their In-laws gave them money to buy outfits of their own choices

i just went and ordered my valima outfit last week. i spoke to my fiance and my SIL and the SIL told my fiance to tell me to pick the outfit myself cuz she knew i was picky and didnt wanna get anything that i wouldnt have liked. if u have a good relationship with ur MIL or fiance or whomever, u can speak to them urself and if u dotn feel comfortable speakign to them, u can always tell ur mom to do the talking for u. theres always a nice way of putting things, u dont wanna offend the inlaws too because im sure they have been looking forward to this day also and want to do a lot of things by themselves.

The valilmay ka dress comes from the guy's side and I was wondering, does the mother-in-law just ask you what you want? I mean I am very picky so I dont want to be disappointed. Isn't it just better she asks me or she and I just go shopping together so we can both agree on what we get?
my MIL plan was also, she told me that she want 2 buy my walima dress, but i spoke 2 her and told her "Dear Ami apne Nikkah ka dress select kia tha ab mera turn hai". Forget the idea 2 do shopping with ur MIL i can say by experince that ur MIL will do what she want it doesnt matter whether what u want. but i wish that u get a chance 2 select what u want.

My MIL & SIL went ahead and ordered something from Libas-e-Khas....but then I was not too keen on it....
I ordered my bridal one from Taufiq Hussain and went on and on about how great Tuafiq's work is :p....
Thus in the end my in-laws ended up canceling their order and went for Taufiq as well for Walima :D

I live in the US and my inlaws are in Dubai.
So we'll all be going to lahore to have the wedding there.
I havent been to pak in over 6 yrs. I have no idea whats what. I'm just gonna have to talk to her. She's cool... I'm sure we'll work things out.
Thats why I wanted to know how people do things these days. lol.. I'm so0o0o0 out of touch!

i m going 2 b married in oct.i just had my valima dress with my choice.me n my mother in law went together all the time 4 my shopping even 4 all my bari dresses.coz i m also very picky....wese there is a trend in my family 2 take the bride with them to choose the bridal dress.i asked my fiance that i will buy my dresses with my choice so plz ask ur mom 4 dis n make sure i will go with her.so he had done according 2 me.n i said 2 my mother in law plz take me wid u 4 the bridal dresses.so u can do the same.u can ask ur fiance or u can ask ur mother in law directly.dun hesitate to ask her.coz its ur day.n if ur not having dress of ur choice......

i really had beautiful dresses 4 my shadi n valima both.

shopping together would be good actually that way you are not totaly eliminating the in-laws from having a say. it is their gift afterall.
it depends…i mean in my case…i was in NY and they were in LA 
…i told her the color i wanted and the style…my lehnga was very prettyyyyyy…but she choose the jewelry…the kaam on my lehnga was silver and copper but unfortunately my jewelry was yellow gold……woh kehtey hein na k you cant have everything…

WELL, when i had my nikkah,i didnt ask my in laws to have my choice ,, but they my sis in law n mIL take me n my mom wid themselves n we all shop together for my nikah day outift n accesorries accpet the Jewelry....n..... then.......... dont mind girls.. but unhu ne jo jewellery di wo us waqt tu mene pehn li,,, but then i said to my huby that i didnt like the design its too muchh aunnties... kind'a design so he agrees n he got it changed for me :) ,khehekhehhe,
so after this,, my MIL decided to have shopping Wid FOr my wedding of EACH n EVERY thing.... :P ....
