Did you face difficulty in finding a job

With a Muslim name ?
If no that is very good. If yes please share your story/stories.

I wear a hijab. I have a weird muslim name. I am brown. I live in a non-muslim country. Yet I have never been rejected in an interview. Alhumdulillah!

When you remember Allah, he remembers you too.

Re: Did you face difficulty in finding a job

Why is this in the relationship section.

I have a very amreekan name; and I often wonder if a hijab would hinder anything.

Re: Did you face difficulty in finding a job

I think my difficulty in finding a job has more to do with everything else BUT my name.

Re: Did you face difficulty in finding a job

I wanted to post it in AV, somehow it ended here. Sorry mods can you please transfer it ?

true.

All that employers care about is how beneficial you are and how much money you can make for them.

Re: Did you face difficulty in finding a job

It hasn't happened to me personally yet, Alhamdulillah.

However I do know of a Turkish guy who applied for a job with his own name, Ahmed. He saw an ad in the newspaper and called them up and told them he was interested in the function. They said 'We're sorry, we have just hired someone for that function.'
The next day he called again and thought of a Dutch name and again asked for the function. They didn't ask him a thing at all and invited him for an interview.

Re: Did you face difficulty in finding a job

As I said in my opening post. If it did not happen to you that is good. It never happened to me either, Alhumdulillah. I could get in lot of trouble at one point of time because of my Muslim name based on horror storied some people told me. But Alhumdulillah that difficult phase of my life passed without any big issues.
But I hear many stories from many folks everyday about their name and how they were treated in one or other aspect of their lives.

I wish to hear the stories like ChillyMilly shared above.

Re: Did you face difficulty in finding a job

I have pretty islamic name - so people do question the origin during interviews.

But no but AH - I haven't had issues.

I have had many many many friends discrimanted against because of wearing hijaab in getting good jobs, getting in law school, b school etc

Re: Did you face difficulty in finding a job

Hijabis are hated for no reason these days anyway njgal, your post reminded me of a friend of mine who worked in a toystore.

Her contract was about to end and they were considering of extending it. Her boss had only one thing to ask her: Are you planning to wear hijab any day soon? She was kind of taken aback and asked why he was asking that. Her boss goes, 'Oh, because we can't take a risk. Children might get scared of girls wearing hijab. We've had cases in which children started crying (BS ofcourse)'

It's very common in Holland, especially when you live in a place where there isn't a large Muslim population. They can always replace you with someone 'white'.

Re: Did you face difficulty in finding a job

There have been studies done which show that not only people with muslim sounding names get tossed out, but other foriegn names as well as african american names.

similar studies were done in UK and found similar stuff..here is a link for the UK story

^ well dont name you're kid shawneeqa then!

Shocking indeed.

Re: Did you face difficulty in finding a job

a guy in the same city as me used to appear every few months in our local newspaper sueing companies for racial discrimination. apparently all he did was apply to various places of employment with his own cv and one fabricated, albeit with an english name, and made slightly less appealing then his own. used to read about him getting thausands in compensation and he deserved it. companies were rejecting him with letters, excuses and allsorts which all turned out to be lies in court

i dont know about now, but at the time it was certainly racial discrimination which was the risk, not religious.

dunn justify racism though.

Such a creative way to become millionaire overnight.

Re: Did you face difficulty in finding a job

I was definitely asked about my religious background and if it was going to be a problem...

I was like...huh??

When my brother was out looking for a job, he was rejected by some but mainly he wasn't even contacted, even though he was more than qualified for most of the jobs..... all of his 'goray' friends had no probelm when many of them weren't that qualfied (they say so themselves) ......people starting telling us to change his name because his name was too 'apparent'....my brother and family was totally against this......eventually he found a very good paying job working for the federal government and he enjoys his job and gets along very well with his coworkers. I know discrimination is out there and when one gets rejected from a position its heartbreaking but there are lots of companies that don't discriminate and in the long haul these companies are the ones that you would want to work for...not the other ones.

P.S. Brother's first name is Muhammad, people told us to change his first name to his middle name....which everyone actaully calls him by

No. Once they get familiar with you and know that your Muslim then their is much curiosity about the religion and culture. Also, in light of current events they sometimes happen to ask questions and if they are controversial, I just avoid them.

Re: Did you face difficulty in finding a job

Yeah i find it a huge problem i've been trying to find a job since day.. Thats why i like to go in person if i hand a CV so they can see my face. My last name is Ahmed. So i think they see that and throw my CV away. I have quite good qualifications too. My CV is excellent. But nope no jobs as of yet.
