While we are done with Get Smart and USR, can we all get back to the question at hand. When Allah forbidded Alcohol, he also gave us a reason why - coz it's intoxicating and make one forget prayers etc and also because there is more harm to it than good. Jo aj kay liya evil thee wo thou kal kay liya bhee evil honee chaiya. Even if the christian brethens have a quote like **Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whoever is deceived thereby is not wise. **as Hareem1 just mentioned.
Yusuf Ali: [2:219] They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say: "In them is great sin, and some profit, for men; but the sin is greater than the profit."
But no one came up with a definite answer.
My question came up after I read the topic on Dr Israr's claims based on the hadith that Hazrat Ali a.s drank alcohol (I know it claims that this was before the verse came down).
I personally believe that the Prophets (pbu them all) didn't consume alcohol and so did Hazrat Ali a.s. I believe someone taught and brought up by the Prophet won't touch such a thing. Alcohol is so much associated with evil
So it's surprising to see ppl accept that Hazrat Ali a.s. - "the gate of knowledge" drank alcohol and then I thought - what about the prophets then, what do ppl think about them with regard to consuming alcohol.
I thought someone would come with a definite answer from a Ahle Sunnah wal Jammat perspective but it looks like there's not much reference to this.
Khair...
First of all Ali(ra) was not a Prophet. And second of all, no Prophet worshipped idols but Sahaba(ra) did (ofcourse before they became muslim).

I think you are basing it on what one person said..is this the case?
Many people do not consider Dr. Israr Ahmed as an authentic scholar.
Re: Did the Prophets before Mohammad (pbuh) drink?
There were minor differences in the laws of earlier prophets.
For example Camel's meat was prohibited for consumption in earlier law, primarily due to scarcity of the animal or lower growth rate or maybe it was primary mode of transportation. Anyway whatever may be the reason it was not allowed to kill the animal and eat its meat.
In prophet Muhammad's sharia it is perfectly allowed to consume camel's meat. Maybe due to abundance of the animal and availability.
Furthermore dietry laws for jews are far more strict than in islam. For example they are not allowed to mix products of milk and with meat, poultry etc.
Consumption of wine is as old as advent of human civilization. Not all forms of its use is bad , as mentioned in holy quran. There are some benefits too. Like it keeps you warm in cold weather. So if people of Alaska consume liquor then it is their genuine and legitimate requirement. They do it keeping their bodies warm and in working condition.
So Hypothetically if some prophet was appointed in colder region, it is very much possible that liquor was not banned for those people. They consumed it for very reason staying well and fighting chilly weather conditions.
Perfumes are intoxicating. Hookha is intoxicating....whether now or arabian nights period, all stories about muslims involve drinking, smoking and perfumes. So what distinction are you talking about that muslims have?
What's wrong with taking a wine in moderation when it is good for you? Do people eat only for nutritious value or for taste and associated pleasure?
Perfumes are intoxicating? are you talking about drinking it? and as for wine, since when did human understood moderation?
Hain? I never said he was a prophet?! Where did idol worshipping come about in this thread?
Peace little human
If you look carefully at what Hareem01 is saying it would help. She is not saying that you are calling Ali (RA) a prophet, but you have given a non-prophet the same infallibility just because he is a close relative. Ali (RA) as not really raised by Muhammad (SAW) either. Hareem01 used the notion of idol worship as an example that non-prophets can be without guidance on a completely wrong path and eventually through guidance come on the right one, so it is probable that after believing there were some things that were being done based on the lifestyle of the jahiliyya, especially seeing that there was a considerable time when khamr was not banned outright.
It only states that the indulgence in strong drink (getting drunk) is wrong. The Bible DOES NOT prohibit the consumption of alcohol in moderate quantities for enjoyment.

That's your own interpretation. "wine is a mocker(deception)".
Re: Did the Prophets before Mohammad (pbuh) drink?
Why all this theoretical debate. Most muslims around here drink. And most of them are decent people who don't carry their religion as a monkey in the back but as spiritual strength. So stop making drinking of all kinds sound like a sin - you're making the same mistake taking things to an extreme as some other muslims do taking other matters to an extreme.
If you say Jesus was a prophet (many muslims try to co-opt christianity and judaism as earlier forms and seek Jesus as a elder prophet) then why are you arguing the point about earlier prophets drinking? Jesus made wine, obviously to be drunk.

The correct one though....
There is a scripture in the Old Testament where the Israelites is exhorted to save a tenth of their income and to spend it on: ...Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, bwine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice...

Please provide statistics about how many of the muslim population drinks. Don't make claims you cannot justify. 1 out of a 10000 muslims drinking is not MOST. For muslims drinking is a Sin. Period. Again muslims have their own scriptures and material to follow, we don't need your opinions to tell us what is needed. So did this also evolve from dictionary.com.

The issue is only Cows in India are holy not anywhere else. The other issue is that people like Get Smart behave secular only outside of India because religion stays within the boundaries of India alongwith the cows.
