1/4th of century.. A Love-Hate relationship… till they got separated.
Did these both parts (East Pakistan & West Pakistan) have anything common other than religion? Did they follow religion in same manner?
I don’t see anything that got Bengali roots in Pakistan.
People of Bengla Desh are reported to have a cold behavior with Pakistanis todate. Heard that they like Hindi movies but dislike Urdu. Did they get something that can be connected with Pakistan’s (West Pakistan) culture?
Re: Did Bengalis leave marks of their Culture on West Pakistan?
Outside their countries, Indian and Pakistanis also don't show such attitude. It has been reported by people (Pakistani) who visited Bangladesh after 1971.
Re: Did Bengalis leave marks of their Culture on West Pakistan?
I agree with TLK Bhaiyya...I also have many friends from Bangladesh here (in fact, my cousin is marrying into a Bangladeshi family) and I've never seen or felt them be cold of indifferent towards Pakistanis or the Urdu language. In fact, they can't stop gushing over Pakistani kapray and designers, and watch the same dramas etc. They are very loving and accepting.

Generation after 1971 are not anti-Pakistani....however, recent political situation in Bangladesh are not favorable... It may increase hate against Pakistan....
If that is the case then probably in reaction with what we have done to them. To this day, we use the term bhooka bengali in a derogatory way. I remember galiyaan written against Bengalis on my school outside wall. This was right after 71 war. I was in first grade then, but still remember that.
Re: Did Bengalis leave marks of their Culture on West Pakistan?
You are right muqawee. Both wings considered their culture to be superior to the other. There wasn't much interaction between the two.
The answer is lies in front of you, do you see any bangali'ness in pakistani culture?
Yes its true they follow indian entertainment, consequently, awareness of north indian culture, which is similar to Pakistan. But they still hold on to contempt for anything explicitly labelled 'Pakistani'.
Unfortunately, interactions in western countries do not represent the reality. If that was the case, Pakistan and India would be upto each others' noses in love, which we all know is NOT the reality on the ground.
Re: Did Bengalis leave marks of their Culture on West Pakistan?
I know they are loving and my personal opinion about Bengalis is that they are among those Muslims who follow simplicity unlike other Muslims living across sub-continent. But the harsh memories of 1971, do haunt people. I’ve a personal exposure when a delgation from Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh visited Pakistan on golden jubilee celebrations of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan. Their representative took certain remarks of Jawed Jabbar too seriously and in a professional seminar (in presence of representative from SARC countries) went on to say that we were never appreciated on this land.
There was definitely a change in attitudes of people in Bengladesh which is obvious from the fact that people like Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Madam Noorjehan who were loved by Bengalis never visited Bengaldesh again.
As far as Urdu is concerned, that was portrayed as root cause by people who were advocates of separation of East Pakistan and these feelings for Urdu never settled. Urdu started as camp language in sub-continent and now Urdu language is limited to camps as far as Bengladsh is concerned.
After the creation of Bangladesh when Urdu speaking people began to face discrimination and difficulties, they were compelled to migrate to other countries where Urdu was being spoken. Under the tripartite agreement between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, Urdu speaking people began to be sent to Pakistan. This process continued upto 1993 and about two lakh Urdu speaking people migrated to Pakistan. Thereafter in 2002 Urdu speaking people who were left in Bangladesh became a stateless community whom neither India nor Pakistan nor Bangladesh was prepared to accept. After a judicial verdict of May 2008 Urdu speaking people were granted Bangladeshi citizenship but according to that country’s Constitution there is discrimination against Urdu.
Re: Did Bengalis leave marks of their Culture on West Pakistan?
You are right. Its an irony that normal Bengali Muslims were tagged as kafir (as they were music loving people attached with their land, who loved Tagor more than Iqbal), but now in Pakistan these things tagged as Bengali (which are actual kufr) got so much acceptance and popularity.
Re: Did Bengalis leave marks of their Culture on West Pakistan?
Interestingly, Bangladeshis say they are truer muslims compared to pakistanis, because they converted willingly whereas west pakistanis converted under force from invaders, hence western pakistanis aren't muslim by heart, rather they are outward muslims only.
Re: Did Bengalis leave marks of their Culture on West Pakistan?
As far as contribution of Bengalis is concerned, they did contributed in arts and music of Pakistan. Actors like Nadeem, Shabna, Rehman, etc... Singers like Aalamgir, Runa Laila and who can forget melodies of Robin Gosh in Pakistan. But from our side it was mostly hate and contempt that was gifted to Bengalis.
Re: Did Bengalis leave marks of their Culture on West Pakistan?
It is depressing… a country (Bangladesh) was faced discrimination… they got independence or split in 1971…
A one who is going through pain.. should not repeat same steps which were result of pain… As an Independent state… Bangalis or Bangla Gov’t should recognize other minorities and protect their rights…
Wait… they are still living in past… whole creation of Bangladesh is big slap on their face… As long time ago… Indra Gandhi taunt on theory of Pakistani… sunk in bay of Bengal… she was right…
Re: Did Bengalis leave marks of their Culture on West Pakistan?
its the other minorities (aka biharis) who didnt want to join the bangladeshis, and kept waiting for pakistan to resettle them back to their country. so how is it the bengalis fault? after two generations, some of them have realized the rescue is never coming and they better be bangladeshis.
and as for minorities in general, they are safer in bangladesh than in india or pakistan or srilanka.

Bangladesh had never been recognize them as citizen till 2008....
Re: Did Bengalis leave marks of their Culture on West Pakistan?
She was not right, as after all the chaos Bangladesh is still a separate independent country. This proves that what happened in 1971 was not negation of what was decided in 1947. The theory of non-partitioned India as propagated by Gandhi buried forever in 1947.
But this doesn’t mean that there is something to be rejoiced. We need to learn from past practices, which is unfortunately not the case. We still don’t learn how to respect others cultures.

It was becuase they themselves didn't want to accept the nationality. In between, they missed opportunities and generations grown in camps during intermittent period would be a liability for themselves and society as a whole, till they are settled.
