Dhaba culture

Dhaba is less formal restaurant on roadside of busy highway and truck drivers are main beneficiaries… Food is available on cheaper price while quality and taste remain mouthwatering(as per my assumption)… Dhaba is open kitchen, where food cooks on demand at any time… I guess, it is 24 X 7 availability of food service…

In modern age, *dhaba *is getting popularity among urban population of major cities… and transforming into family friendly… What is your experience of *dhaba *?

Re: Dhaba culture

Not all dhaba serves mouth watering food

Re: Dhaba culture

*Dhaba *is opposite extreme of fine dining.... What was bad with food?

Re: Dhaba culture

I don't try having food in dhabas as I didn't have to travel on long routes. Once I had lunch in a dhaba (on way from Sukkur to Rahim Yar Khan) and it was tasteless and baasi. You need to have extra active digestive system to coup with after-affects.

Re: Dhaba culture

I did lunch at dhaba twice or thrice and breakfast seldom..... Lunch was delicious..... and *nashta *was similar to *anda chai *and *paratha *of Pathan's hotel...

Modern dhaba is expensive and quite close to fine dining experience but style and serving pretty close to traditional dhaba...

Re: Dhaba culture

What do you mean by modern dhaba? Motels?

Re: Dhaba culture

No. It means sophisticated *dhaba *style dining like Al Sajjad or Al Habib at Super Highway....

Some 500 years ago, roadside restaurants called Dhabas began serving travelers of the highway and local community with local cuisine; and for centuries the food has been enjoyed at Dhabas around India.

Most Indian highways play host to these roadside restaurants. *Most Dhabas comprise of one shed-like building where the food is cooked, surrounded by Charpoys (day-bed type seating) at which the food is served! *

Traditionally, Dhabas in Delhi or any where in India, used to cater mainly to truckies and long-distance travelers. However, nowadays everyone seems to enjoy the simple, unpretentious and wholesome food served at the Dhabas - mainly for tickling their taste buds with the authentic flavors of desi food at its best.

In other words, the word dhaba has come to represent any restaurant that serves Punjabi food . Dhaba food is rustic; it is strong and in-the-face.

Re: Dhaba culture

500 years? BTW what is the origin of word dhaba? which lanaguge it belongs? seems Punjabi.

Re: Dhaba culture

I read it somewhere on internet.... It looks Punjabi....

I like their style

Re: Dhaba culture

style? How is that different from other restaurants in the city?

Re: Dhaba culture

500 years back means during Sher Shah Suri and Akbar's period. That were called 'Sara'ay' not dhaba.

Re: Dhaba culture

Kadhai Handi in a samll mutka pot..... and they charge more than Rs. 1000..... I remember, one of my relative was quite disturbed..... itnay pesay main to khud hi bana laity.....

It’s resturant + dhaba

Re: Dhaba culture

itne paise main khud bana ke poore ghar walon ko khilaya ja sakta. Most places just cash brand name and with the passage of time quality also goes down.

I don’t know how much they charge since i never paid :snooty:

Re: Dhaba culture

I think, it is

  • open air
  • charpai
  • far away from city
  • fine dining in dhaba style
  • family frienldy

:hmmm:

Sary mard aik he jaisy hoty hain kanjoos
Umeera ahmed ka ye dialogue to sab jaga use ho jata hy :hehe:
Jo bahar ja kar paisy zaya krny ka maza hy wo ghar me nahi :nahi:
Ghar me to bnta he rehta hy

They serve on charpai outside the resturant.Inside it is similar like any other resturant.
