Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women
Inspite of hating Devdasi or their singing, Muslim women adapted this.. I mean to say observe a Mehfil e Milad and Hindu Katha reading ceremony, you'll find many similarities :D
Regarding traits of a women, I heard it to be total 36... But I don't know what were those traits / characteristics?
Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women
 now I knew what was the inspiration and source of the infamous tradition of marrying girls with Quran in Sindh.
The tradition of dance and Indian socio-religious-cultural system goes together. Devadasi is a group of women who danced in the temple premises. The term devadasi literally means slave (dasi) of God (deva). She is dedicated to a divine husband who can never die. Marriage with a God exempted a woman from the uncomfortable state of widowhood. In Orissa, Devadasi is known as Mahari means "those great women who can control natural human impulses, their five senses and can submit themselves completely to God”. In another version Mahari means “Mohan Nari” that is the woman belonging to God. Sri Chaitanayadev had defined Devadasis as ‘Sebaets’ who served God through dance and music. Pankaj Charan Das, the oldest Guru of Odissi, who belongs to a Mahari family, explains Mahari as “Maha-Ripu -Ari (one who conquers the five main ripus or enemies). The life of Maharis is a saga of devotion, they not allowed marrying. They lived in a close- knit community, and to propagate the system they adopted daughters. They were usually trained from a very early age, and have very little control over her life. After completion of the training, the adolescent girl had to go through a ritual in the temple. In front of the king, the priests and other important people they were dedicated to Lord Jagannath. A piece of cloth, taken from Lord Jagannath was tied on the girl’s head, as a part of the ceremony. This ritual is called the ‘Sari Bandha’ or 'Samarpan Cermony’. The foster mother had to give a part of her wealth to the dance Guru (sometimes to the temple priests), as a price for acquiring the right to serve the Lord.
Looking into historical facts; the first reference to a Devdasi is found in the mention of Queen Kolavati of Keshari dynasty (6[SUP]th[/SUP] century A.D.) having constructed the Brahmeswar temple and dedicated many Devadasis to it. In the same period references are found to the Meghaswar and Sovaneswar temple also having Devadasis. When King Chodagangadev completed the construction of the Jagannath temple, he regularized the temple administration completely. He created 36 categories of workers to serve Lord Jagannath. The Devadasis were one of them. He allotted land for their living (till date known as ‘Chudangasahi’ provided them with regular maintenance, and disciplined their lives with various rules and regulations. The detailed accounts of the rules are written in ‘Madala Panji’. From the beginning, the Maharis were treated with great respect and compared to none other than Goddess Lakshmi; the wife of Lord Vishnu.

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women
So this tradition survived 800 years of Muslim Rule? What does this mean?
Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women
Devdasis were dedicated to God, they had god as their husband but ended up as prostitutes, its like fate of salatins:D
the original concept was NagarVadhu, literately, wife of city, there used to be beauty competition and winner had the title of NagarVadhu who used to dance on the occasions in the houses of high end people somewhat similar to modern day high end escorts:D
This probably means that muslims were tolerant or they didn’t want to enrage people or it wasn’t muslim rule at all:D
