Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

While discussing the old professions of the world, Ninja pointed out Devdasis allegedly connected to the world’s oldest and infamous profession i.e. Prostitution. I came across this article, which tells us other side of the story, where Devdasis were given immense social and religious importance.

DEVADASIS – TIME TO REVIEW HISTORY

So after reading this article, Devdasis seems to me equal to Christian Nuns.

Please go through this government notification and try to understand exact social status of devdasis…

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

But the practice in itself remained prestigious as claimed in OP article and especially the requirement of bead from Devdasi's necklace to make a Mangalsutra of the bride shows that they were acceptable to society as a whole. Exploitation of women exist in all societies irrespective of the region and religion.

So is it only AP or other states, where they banned this tradition?

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

Zaid hameed is not a person its a mentality.......................:D

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

Every where the banned that tradition while there is no law against Nuns...............:)

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

Now what this laal topi wala maskhra has to do with the history of others, who is very keen in interpreting his own history?

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

There is no law against the nuns (subject to same exploitation as Devdasis), because Indian Government doesn't want to interfere in minorities issues, which may cost them international controversy.

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

I wanted to say that there are few peoples every where who twist the facts.....
you can understand if that tradition was so pious why government has to ban it.....

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

No i had not seen or heard about any news of exploitation or prostitution of nuns......
But devdasis were exploited physically ............:D

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

Agree there are people who exploit / twist things as per their agenda... but Devdasi was a centuries old tradition and women from upper class also devoted themselves to be Devdasi... This shows that the tradition was developed not for bad purposes, but at a time it went in a wrong way to cause defamation.

Just google about sister Jesme In Amen :naraz:

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

there may be one , two or few cases but Devdasis were public property.....

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

The point is if you deviate yourself from a natural thing, at a stage it bounce back to create problems that Devdasis had faced and Nuns are going to face. The number of cases doesn't matter, the basic ideas leading to such things matter.

As I said, at a time, many upper class women were devoted themselves as devdasis with the approval of their families.. so the tradition was not basically meant for what it has become today.

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

No I dont think so have you ever heard about tradition of niyog?

Devadasis Were Degraded Buddhist Nuns

yeh bhi ek idealogy hai plz read it…

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

Yes goggled it.. but that is another thing and as criminal as Satti and like traditions are... but if being celibate in form of nun is acceptable to society, then why to raise fingers on Devdasis?

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

Oooh i like this discussion. It's a very interesting interpretation of how devadasis are seen today compared to their original roles.
So what about all those mujra dancing images and all of that, how did they become so glamourised then? Obviously bollywood played a big part, but I always thought it was just about dancing for men, rather than any prostitution being involved.

Hmm.

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

hahaha.. the way bollywood glamorised things is a history itself.. be it Dakoo like Kali Charan to Ghabbhar Singh or Tawaif's like Umrao Jan and Pakeeza, bollywood left its impact.

Dancing was not a taboo in Hindu religion and at a time while choosing brides, girl's sur / dance were considered to be additional characteristics... Hindu society does ideolise characters like Meera Bai todate, who left her home and passed her life by traveling from one place to other and writing bhajans for Krishna whom she called her spiritual husband.

Re: Devdasis - Misunderstood Women

Hmm. I did read that women who wrote shaiyari in the old days were considered wise etc etc, esp in the upper classes where it indicated they were educated. Didn't know about dancing being considered a good trait, although it does make sense.
I guess devdasis are just one more reason why 'traditional' Muslims don't like their kids to listen to music/dance, cos it's considered haram.

Bollywood interpretations, ha, you're right. That's a topic in itself!
