Devdas

Watching the latest Bollywood sensation Devdas is a bit like clearing the pudding trolley at one go: the flaring colours, elaborate song-and-dance sequences and opulent locations are so full-on that you feel sated after an hour – and there are still two more to go. What the film hasn’t much of is subtlety: its story of golden boy Devdas (Shahrukh Khan) returning to India after 10 years in London and being caught between the love of childhood sweetheart Paro (Aishwarya Rai) and courtesan Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit) apparently reflects a celebrated love triangle of Indian mythology, but for all its pedigree it does little to catch at the heart. It may, on the other hand, give you indigestion.

i think the film was excellent due to its dance sequences and colours and the performance given by aishwarya, madhuri and shaurukh was really appreciable. the story however is a bit traditional but i personally thimk the film was very good.

This is the first Bollywood film presented in the competition section at Cannes, and one of the most expensive Hindi epics ever made. Not, however, one of the best, since the glitz, glamour and slightly tacky luxury on display almost strangles the life out of its relatively simple story of a high-caste family ruining the life of their favoured son by refusing to let him marry the girl who was his childhood sweetheart.

Bimal Roy made the best version of Saratchandra Chatterjee’s much-loved novel in the 1950s with the great Dilip Kumar in the lead as Devdas, the lovelorn tragic hero. That at least attempted to show India as it was at the time the story was written. This adaptation has the whole thing on garishly luxurious sets that may dazzle the eye, but have very little to do with the much more intimate psychology of the story.

The film, made with an interval, plays much better that way, since its second half proves that the story still has some force, even in these circumstances, as Devdas becomes an alcoholic and takes up with his prostitute for some kind of emotional comfort. But those who think Bollywood is always like this should reflect that some of the greatest of Indian film-makers worked there and cut through the cliches considerably better than this.

It was a good movie over all, but very trajic and depressing

I loved the dresses and dances though…specially dresses wore by Madhuri were amazing. Since its Bangladeshi story, i really liked the fact that they had all traditional Bangla dresses not superficial ones.

For people in Toronto, just wanted to let you know that Devdas is also playing at AMC Interchange 30 and its much more peaceful there. My friend couldn't find a place yesterday becuz there was full house in Albion and Woodside.

The movie waz amazing due to scenery and dance sequences. And the make up done one on Aish and Madhuri…damn thats 5 million bucks rite there (eye makeup was gorgeous though..all glittery). I would go watch this movie in the cinema just cuz itz soo pretty. There waz this one scene with Shahrukh and AIsh at this gorgoues glittery waterfall and then they were sittin on this flower-decorated swing and just swingin on top of the clear water…damn. Hehe anywazy i liked this movie

ps Shah Rukh and Jackie Shroff acted well

Lotsa artsy fartsy stuff.
Extreme glamour.
I liked the movie because it brought out the emotions and for once not a happy ending but a real ending.

7/10

Jitna Diya Sarkar Nay Mujko, Itni Meri Auqat Nahi, Yeh Saab Tumhara Karam Hai Aqa, Mujh Mein Aisi Koi Baat Nahin.

It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow.

And why so kanjoos? Me gonna watch it on Sunday

Hope it won’t be a dissapointment.

What a movie what a story and what amazing performance by SRK (the one I hated a lot! has impressed me for good).
Eventhough I knew the story coz I already saw the old Devdas with DILIP KUMAR and Co, I never felt bored. Not at all actually I was amazed by the great performance of SRK, Aish (

) and Madhuri (no surprise to me though).
They brought a old story alive with such hard wark, full passioned their acting and great scenario.

I’m just speechless. No fazool bak bak gaanas (although they could have prevented the “sharabi song” (I guess it was part of story though))…do I need to tell more?

People just go and watch this piece of perfection.

p.s.: At least some story that ends the way I want it and all this love thingy didn’t work this time
