I think it’s partly due to limited exposure. Experiences…especially positive ones can help in removing prejudices. I wouldn’t be surprised if the older generation is not interacting much with Black folks in the community. Another thing to consider is that in some professions…engineering/medicine, etc…which desis tend to gravitate to…have a lack of other minories such as African Americans. Which goes back to the point of their being a lack of exposure in the form of more meaningful interactions.
I remember learning about this in my Mulicultural Ed class…there are certain groups of minorities in the US that have a greater percentage that make up the at-risk/lower socio-economic class/group. And because many people from a certain ethnic group are living in poverty…that poverty can lead to a greater crime rate within that group…and the frequency plays a role in devleoping/perpetuating a stereotype. But rather than try to understand what is the cause behind the negative stereotypes…people will sometimes take the easy way out and say that “That’s just how those people are. It’s in their nature to be bad”. Doesn’t help things obviously.
