Re: Desis are racist!
Lolll! That’s hilarious. My mom used to work at a salon as a hairstylist. She had a Korean client one day and the lady did not like my mom’s hairtcut ^so she told my mom. My mom said to her face very innocently, "that can’t be, all Chinese love this hairstyle!"Yes, she got fired! To this day she doesn’t realize it was an inappropriate comment. I love my sweet innocent mom!
Re: Desis are racist!
Every single person is racist in some way. Not only the desi community living abroad.
This.
Every human being is inherently prejudiced against another (The criteria might be different for different people). We profile everyone we see. And this goes for Desis and non-Desis everywhere in the world. I know a lot of whites that hate every other colour, I know blacks that do the same and the list goes on and on. So yeah, its just how the world works. This whole topic is so passe.
True story.
Can’t we just all hold hands and sway, while we sing cumbah yah?
Re: Desis are racist!
Its Kumbaya and I bet a tenner you don’t know what that really means.
Re: Desis are racist!
Desis are racist and goray/kalay/peelay/neelay are not?

Yes, as a community everyone has prejudice and is racist. However, we all have learned our lesson from the mistakes we have made in our past. These days Kids at a very young age are taught to not discriminate against people that are different from them. Islam itself dislikes racism. ^so even though we are inherently racist/prejudiced, we know better now not to make it obvious. This train of thought is missing among desis. You can make all the politically correct comments you want but you know as intelligent human beings, we should know beter.

Agreed with the part about not making it obvious or letting it affect your decisions.
I strongly disagree that this train of thought is missing in Desis. Again, you only need to look at your local paper, look all across the internet, watch TV and listen to radio shows. Racism and prejudice is everywhere and its very obvious in most places in the world. The attitudes of people are reflected in their laws and policies in all areas of life and more obviously in instances of violence and disregard for others.
Fact is, everyone is racist and not just Desis.
Re: Desis are racist!
Why as desis are we so oblivious to the fact that it's not nice to pass racist comments? Lack of education? I don't think so. We are not taught that racism is ugly and though we all are racist one way or another we should not make it so damn obvious. Lol

We're not the only ones. Seriously, watch the news?
Re: Desis are racist!
Again my point is we make it very obvious and do not think twice that it's wrong. Yes, the entire world is racist but they are not very direct about it and are aware of what they say. TheresA degree of awareness in then that's not found in desis. And sorry, I am not racist and I know many Many people goray, kalay, neelay, peelay sab that are not racist at all.
Re: Desis are racist!
The people that know they are racist are the worst type of racists. These are the peoe you see on th news. Our desi people are among the blissfully ignorant racists.
Re: Desis are racist!
I am only talking about desis living abroad. There is this inherent fear of black people in our community that I notice all the time. This is especially true for the older generation. Why do you think this is so?
Mr. Theorist, I found your statement to be quite paradoxical.
Re: Desis are racist!
Islam itself dislikes racism. ^so even though we are inherently racist/prejudiced, we know better now not to make it obvious.
Um why do you care what Islam thinks or doesn't think? Last I read, you were atheist and don't believe in Islam....so why care?
Re: Desis are racist!
The reason I said only desis living abroad is becausE it's usually those desis that come in contact with most races. Pakistanis back home are colorist more than racist.

Is it that hard to figure out? Obviously I don't care what 'Islam' thinks. Is this a person anyway? I mentioned this because pakistanis are Muslims and they like to bring islam into everything. Duh... Does this make sense?
Re: Desis are racist!
Fear of Only black people ? We have a derogatory name for every nation of the world and our own ethnic and religious groups ?
Now why is so , I guess we suffer from all kinds of xenophobia.
I believe to some degree each of us is a "racist", it might take a different name or a different shape owing to the conditions in which we live, yet the existence of the feeling of the pride is rather innate and impetus to the concept of ego.

I think it's partly due to limited exposure. Experiences....especially positive ones can help in removing prejudices. I wouldn't be surprised if the older generation is not interacting much with Black folks in the community. Another thing to consider is that in some professions...engineering/medicine, etc.....which desis tend to gravitate to.......have a lack of other minories such as African Americans. Which goes back to the point of their being a lack of exposure in the form of more meaningful interactions.
I remember learning about this in my Mulicultural Ed class....there are certain groups of minorities in the US that have a greater percentage that make up the at-risk/lower socio-economic class/group. And because many people from a certain ethnic group are living in poverty....that poverty can lead to a greater crime rate within that group..........and the frequency plays a role in devleoping/perpetuating a stereotype. But rather than try to understand what is the cause behind the negative stereotypes........people will sometimes take the easy way out and say that "That's just how those people are. It's in their nature to be bad". Doesn't help things obviously.
