#desinameproblem

Inspired by @partyslims and the conversation going on in @Mezhgan’s blog

What’s your name and more importantly, how has it been butchered by someone who’s not a native speaker of Urdu/Punjabi/Pashto/Hindko etc etc etc.

Or have you heard of someone else’s name just mispronounced terribly?

my name has 4 letters in. 2 of them are the same. you would THINK it would be easy to pronounce it, right? nope. i’ve heard at least 5 different pronunciations of it. worse part is when an arab speaker asks my name and corrects me on the supposed pronunciation. like shut it it’s my name i know how ti say it

I’ve heard Ahmed pronounced as “Aaa-mud”. Like, there is an H there ya know people…

#desinameproblem

My name is also short and sweet…only 4 letters…every now and then some idiot will pronounce it all twisted to where it rhymes with “mushroom”…seriously?!? Like it’s harder for you to do that then to pronounce it correctly lol!!!

Re: #desinameproblem

the U has the lamba sound to it? OOOOOOOOOO. haha that’s funny :cb:

Re: #desinameproblem

now are we supposed to guess ya’ll’s names?

Re: #desinameproblem

no. you’re supposed to write a name, any name and say how badly it’s been pronounced. :phati:

since everyone’s super shy about sharing their name :vivo:

Re: #desinameproblem

What are we talking about? I am often speechless.

Re: #desinameproblem

I have one. First day of the class in my grad school. Class is half Indians and half Chinese. Prof a white Texan. During roll call he suddenly stops. Struggles a bit. Calls ‘Gay’. Nobody answers. He goes ‘Amit Gay’. All Indians are laughing now. Chinese confused. His name was Ghai.

Re: #desinameproblem

My name is 5 words long. It’s often destroyed by people who can’t pronouce it properly. It’s come to a point where i’ve changed it to the “english pronunciation” yet they still manage to get it wrong, or just give me a nickname with my first 3 letters. I find it disrespectful sometimes.

On rear occasions when I tell an asian my name, and they know how to pronouce it right, it makes my day :chilly:

Re: #desinameproblem

That is ok people. Our community still cannot tell a good difference between Jean, Sean, Shawn, John and Gene.

Re: #desinameproblem

Iqra pronounced Iggra

Sidra ----> Citra

Sana—> Sauna

Nauman—> No man

Re: #desinameproblem

Last two :hehe:

Re: #desinameproblem

I’ve made peace with my name getting butchered. I use a pronunciation that’s easy for most people and usually they don’t screw it up.

Re: #desinameproblem

  2. Nudrat = Nude Rat :hehe:
  3. Fakhr = Fukker :hehe:

my name starts with H ands has two syllables…French people pronounce first syllable as Ash instead of Hash…:hehe:

Re: #desinameproblem

Wow hint de dya

Ab toh purey gs ko pta lg jayega :omg:

Re: #desinameproblem

nahi lag sakta :snooty:

Re: #desinameproblem

My first name is the same as my GS name. It’s a Dari name and gets butchered quite a bit. The British assume it’s a variation of the name Megan (as in Megan Fox) and often pronounce it that way. More irritating is when Iranians correct me about the supposedly correct pronunciation. Pronunciation is relative as there a few different dialects of Persian/Dari (even within Iran), so no! I’m not pronouncing it wrong!

I have a Pashto middle name as well but that usually doesn’t get butchered as the the only speak who call me that speak Pashto and know how to pronounce it.
