Designer Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

I just started my wedding planning and the first thing I wanted to take care of was my bridal dress, like all brides. Living far away from Pakistan, I was driven by quality, efficiency, and the value of time. I weighed my options, and the lack of time I have due to work obligations made me lean towards ordering a dress with a designer; I just didn’t want to micromanage the process. I wanted to lay out my preferences, be done with it, and receive a quality product.

I tried reaching out to Bunto but wasn’t able to. However, I did get through Dr. Haroon on his [EMAIL=“[email protected]”][email protected] email address. He asked me to call him on his cell phone 300 201 5625 and I did. We briefly spoke and I set up an appointment with him for a few weeks down the line for a meeting. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my appointment because I was unable to make it to Pakistan. I requested if he could provide payment details and following is what I received:

Yes, I see reg flags in the email now, but you don’t see them that clearly when you have spoken to the person on the phone. Also, plenty of vendors use WU in Pakistan with oversees clients as means of payment for clothes, etc. I figured he does too. Tax thing was confusing but rich folks are always trying to hide their money. Besides, the payment is in his name, right? So out of haste to get this on order and my mom’s concern of traveling to Karachi these days, I made the 50% advance payment of 3000 USD online (still kicking myself over that).

Well, as soon as the payment went through, I was asked for another payment to be made to South Africa under someone else’s name. That’s when all my red flags went up! I reached out to him but didn’t get through. A friend (respectable person from this site) made the call to him and he picked up. Before she could finish getting her point across that his account is hacked, he vehemently started saying his account is not hacked and what could he possibly be doing in Turkey or South Africa. He asked her that I call him. When I called, he went on about why didn’t I call him for payment and what could he possibly be doing in those countries. We ended the conversation at “IT people” reviewing his account upon his suggestion. He also gave me his wife’s email address to handle further communication. As soon as I got off the phone with him, I received another email from his email account stating the payment is urgently needed and mentioned his wife’s name, profession and his Karachi address. I was so freaked out by it that I called him up again right way to tell him that whoever this scammer is has all your personal details (mostly driven by Dr. Haroon’s personal exposure to this hacker at this time). He was out at some type of gathering and was very curt. He said, “What do you want me to do?” A normal person’s reaction would be to leave everything behind and change their password, but no, not “Dr. Haroon.” I sent all the email exchanges to his wife’s email address per our phone conversation, but never heard a word from him. Not even a thank you! I added him on Whatsapp and inquired what they determined and his response was “Beta what can I say.” Then the conversation on Whatsapp even got weird:

Someone from this site has already confirmed that he takes full payment after delivery of the dress. She ordered from him last year.

I shared a lot of this exchange in detail with some of the ladies here as it was going on (even a moderator) and they are all speechless. I am still unsure if all of this has been a scam or part of this has been a scam? I probably won’t get these answers, and even if I do, I am sure they won’t offset my loss.

So all I can say is please be careful with your hard earned money and trust no one!!! I am so emotionally exhausted by this experience. This was the first thing I was taking care of and it turned out to be a complete mess.

We discuss fashion and products but we don’t raise more awareness of payment methods with vendors and designers. We really need to since a lot of us place orders back home on regular basis. Lesson learned and I hope you can take something away from this experience also.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

I really hope this is sorted soon :bummer:

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

Oh wow .. that's scary! Really hope you find out what's going on!

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

Good luck - perhaps you can contact Western Union and see if they have an ID or something of the person who picked up the money in Turkey and SA.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

As soon as I posted this, I sent him a link, and this is what he had to say. I think on the phone/ Whatsapp is the real guy, but unfortunately has a very small heart. He also seems pretty delusional to think I’ll be paying him 10000 USD to still get a dress from him.

I definitely didn't make the SA payment because I figured it's a scam by then and the payment to SA was being requested in another name anyway. But that Turkey money is long gone.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

I feel like strangling the basta**. I feel you were scammed by an imposter but still his way of dealing with you is beyond pathetic. I sympathize with you and am so relieved that I didn't go with him for my bridal. The bigger the designer the more ill mannered they are.
i swear good customer service is as important as the dress when you're abroad, thank god I was saved.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

I assume you sent the MTCN number to Dr. Haroon's email address, correct?

If so, he would have a bit of liability if you addressed the funds to him and provided him with the MTCN number. Yes, the address may be incorrect, but the recipient of the number was him, but for his email account being hacked.

If you think about it, you were following instructions received from his email address, further to a transaction you were negotiating with HIM. How would the scammer have gotten your details and access to your email, but for the fact that his email had been compromised?

I think of it like a corporation - if someone misuses the corporation's identity, through the corporation's official channels - the corporation is still on the hook for any fraud being perpetrated.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

My thought process exactly, but forget offering to help, he didn't even thank me and flat out said it's not his responsibility. He was also unusually clam about this whole thing (as if this has happened before) and kept saying his account is not hacked. He didn't freak out as a normal person would that his primary business email account has been hacked. He said he won't address changing his password until later that night. So, so odd and sad.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

Have you considered consumer courts? If the only person who has your information is not keeping it safe then he could be liable.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

I am not even in Pakistan and from what I know, it wouldn't even matter if I was. Law is not really on your side in Pakistan unless you are a well known figure or a politician.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

Not really. I've seen people get results in consumer courts. Just most people don't even try which is the biggest impediment but your location will make it difficult for you to follow it up unless you have a reliable lawyer.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

What a jerk!

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

Yes its gone - but when you pick up money from western union you have to give them a federal photo ID.
Someone must have given them some sort of an ID.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

I was reading up on that and it seems like WU is not too strict with those details. The transaction was actually placed on hold in the middle of the night (my time), and I had an email from his acct stating that I need to release the payment. However, it was released by WU before I got around to calling them. So when I work up in the morning, I had an email from them saying payment on hold and then another email saying money was picked up. There might be someone working from WU with this scammer.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

Have you reported this to Western Union and the authorities?

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

I havent been on gupshup for quite a while but I saw this and had to respond.

First, I'm really sorry that you've lost so much money. I would be very upset as well and I really hope you find some sort of resolution. But with that said, this isn't Dr. Haroon's fault.

I've ordered not one, but two bridals from him and he always requests things to be sent to his personal bank account, which is obviously much safer. Secondly, you admitted yourself that red flags should've gone up with the original email; why would he ask you to transmit money under a different name to a different country? I don't think he's liable to make you a bridal when he wasn't responsible for what happened and trying to malign his good name when you weren't being cautious in the first place is in poor taste. Yours is the first bad thing I've ever read or heard about him, he's known for making his customers happy and in fact, he always delivers more than what he promises. That's been my experience and what I've seen other people write here as well. Are you sure you sent it to [email protected]? You didn't make the address visible in your original screenshot of the email so you can't be sure.

I don't know if anyone hacked him or not, but we should be aware that these things could happen: just the other day, Fahad Hussayn posted on Instagram about how he's been hacked and he's not liable for people who get scammed like this. With that said, I doubt Dr. Haroon has been hacked because I've been in touch with him over the past few months over email and whatsapp for payment as well. As aqsafar said, you should report this to Western Union and hope that they can try to help you in some way.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

Thanks, but maybe no one says anything bad about “the top” designers because of reaction like this. Even I questioned posting this because he is supposed to be “so nice” out of all of them. I hadn’t done business with him before, so I didn’t know what he preferred as means of payment. I got directions on his email account to send it via WU. Also, if you note, the first and only payment I made was under his name. This is the email account he is currently using, so it’s not like I emailed the wrong guy, and I am blaming it on Dr. Haroon. There were red flags certainly after the second payment request. Red flags in the first transaction were not that clear because the payment was under his name, not someone else. Here is the screen shot of the email with his email address listed:

He is responsible for his online identity since his primary means of conducting business relies heavily on phone, email, text. Also, if you leave the fact asides that he is or isn’t responsible, isn’t it a common courtesy to at least thank someone, or reach out to them to apologize and work with them since they were duped doing business with them?

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

Sorry for your loss but you should contact western union. 3000 USD is not a small amount and they might be able to get the culprit. Even if it doesn't happen there is no harm in trying.

Re: Dr. Haroon Payment Scam!

You know honestly I'm much more disappointed that he has such a small heart!

He must be making millions of rupees if his ID was compromised (which is His responsibility completely!) He could have thanked her, apologize for the inconvenience and offer her a discount of the amount she has lost due to the fraud instead he brushed the whole thing off and said 'so who is going to give me my advance in Karachi'

I mean seriously? You know it wouldn't have made him poor! Instead been an example of a great customer service which you SHOULD expect if you are paying $6000 for a dress!

Come on peoole its Dr. Haroon and not some small vendor, he handled it so badly that it breaks my heart!
