Good- not desi movies. JK....
Well I define good as anything that challenges the viewer to think. It does not have to overtly be moralistic or anything, but a movie that has no predictability, approaches a subject in a different way, has a somewhat, and strong character development. Overall it challanges assumptions the viewer may have held, but most importantly gets the viewer questioning and thinking whatever the subject matter may be.

so you like philosophical movies presented well … abviously without songs. Then why dont you start reading books, i tell you its a better option than watching movies.
More on movies …what kind of movies you like action, romance, fun, comedy, horror,scifi,childerens , **X … cos in all movies mentioned above your reuirements can be fool filled …

Well singing can be ok. I mean Hair was a good movie. Even grease was ok for what it was ( i didnt like it), but it was different for the time. Hell Tommy was an awesome musical, sound of music, mary poppins, my fair lady, all musicals... yet they were all completly original. Yeah some may have had romance and lame parts and what not, but they were not all the exact same thing. Can you honestly tell me that MOST desi films do not follow the same formulas, and actually make the viewer think? Even somethin g nonsensical can make you think as long as it is different and unique. Desi films would be that except there is so many. Its all the same mass marketed churned out rubbish. I agree hollywood is getting way worse, but its not even close to the way desi cinema is.

Thinking what? That is a personal matter isn’t it? You may see American Psycho and ponder on male vanity, I may dismiss the movie as garbage because it doesn’t hold to my standards of ‘wholesome entertainment’, and another might love it to death. So who is right? It’s childish to assume that everyone will conform to one standard.
btw, take a look at amazon and bollywood movies, and read the reviews. most are by non desis. surprisingly there seems to be a small but steadily growing foreign fan club of bollywood. but of course they’re all crazy, not deeply intellectual like you.

P.S: Some1 makes a good point when he says most Hollywood movies coming out these days are garbage. I can count on my fingers the number of Hollywood movies that were worth watching in a theatre this year. Ofcourse, SgtPepper’s moronic views on cinema won’t let him digest that point!*

Also entertainment is ok, but entertainment does not have to be stupid. If you watched like 2 or 3 desifilms a month your Iq would go down guranteed. I would rather drop my IQ by doing drugs, than watch this stupidity.

Movies can be just as valid a from of expression as literature or painting or any other medium for that matter. I watch movies to think in ways I have not thought before. The whole purpose of art is to express something. Anything... but something nonetheless. I mean any piece of artwork is valid as long as it brings SOMETHING to the table. Unfortunately desi cinema has greatly failed as they keep rehasing the same garbage and garbage over and over. In the golden age of desi cinema the movies were perhaps innovative and unique, but now they are carbon copies of carbon copies. What is it about desi cinema that appeals to you? Why do you find it entertaining, and why are you willing to sacrafice quality for entertainment ?(you know you can have both).
