If you have a bridal suite at the hotel where your reception is being hosted, I don’t see why you won’t be able to manage a dress change. You can go for a worked red jacket like in the picture and wear it over your white gown. And wear a red dupatta on your head when you enter the ballroom.
While dinner is being served, you can head to your room. Take off your jacket. Have a friend with you who can fix your hair and make-up at this time.
how we blended both cultures was have the nikkah the day before, and then on the day of, we had a traditional gora style of ceremony, with flower girls, ring bearer, bridesmaids and groomsmen preceding first my husband, accompanied by his parents, and then i joined him at the altar with mine. we were married again by a justice of the peace.
I forgot to mentioned earlier but we did this too! :)
The justice of the peace civil ceremony was witnessed by almost all the guests of the wedding, and so I didn't have to deal with any "when did you get married" q's (plus it was something all the non-desis could relate to). But the outfits for the civil ceremony were all desi.
Thank you ALL for your lovely responses. Having just gotten engaged - I guess I'm a little behind ont he wedding research! There's so much out there!
Paheli - thanks so much for all your advice and the all the pictures you posted. That helps a lot!
Afshi - thanks for the Abedin's 'fusion' picture. Neat idea!
somegroovychick - thanks for all the info. So you've been through what I'm going through? I just want to represent the union of not on my my fiance and I, but also our respective cultures. That said, I'm not desi myself.
The links you sent are great. I'll show them to my fiance most def. We are planning to do a Polterabend on the day of the Mehndi. I think it would be great fun for our Mehndi guests to break china on the floor. In addition, some of his friends may do a performance to German music (after I'm done convincing them of course).
I am not sure if I'll have my bridesmaids wear the same color/same outfit. My niece is going to be my flower girl and the best man will carry the rings. No ring bearer.

you're not desi but you'd like to wear a desi outfit? that's cool! but how come? i mean, what cultural significance does it hold for you? :)
Sorry - I meant to so I'm not *so desi . *Both my parents are Pakistani - but I never lived there nor was I brought up in a typically Pakistani environment - as in I never wear desi clothes.....ever...
But I am proud to be from Pakistan and stick up for my country of origin whenever people speak badly of it ....and I do think some desi outfits look nice. I would especially like to represent this on my wedding day...so yeah...
somegroovychick... I got so many ideas from this thread. I'll see my mom in a few months and together we'll collaborate something. I'll just be honest with her about how I feel and I'm sure she'll understand and support it.
amazingaquarian - Thanks very much! :) We met through some mutual friends and hit it off instantly.

Deeba1234 - your wedding is on hold because you're having trouble planning the wedding?
Completely unrelated to this thread, but my fiance suggested getting a magician for our wedding reception. What do you guys this?
I think it’s pretty freaking cool! The couple in the link below hired a magician to help with with their entrance (see description end of pics). When hubby and I read this…I wished we had thought of something cool like this for our entrance… It’s definately not something you see at every other desi wedding…
magicians make me think of birthday parties for kids (rabbit out of a hat, etc)... BUT if you get someone who does grown-up magic like criss angel, then thats a totally cool bit of entertainment for the guests.

Cheers!
No.. a certain person wanting everything desi style, with no acknowledgement or consideration of my SO's background at all..
After much thinking and discussing - I have decided to do both on the same night!!
I'm only going to get married once so why hold back? I'm going to try to do nikaah at 6pm and enter reception all in my desi garb...and after an hour's worth of photos change into my more comfortable white dress...
Deeba - have you sorted out what you want to do? Ladies on here are very resourceful and they'll help you just as they helped me..
Your earlier plan about wearing a white dress on walima sounded a good option. Not sure how calm are you, but on a wedding day, brides' don't have time to think let alone changing two dresses and getting makeup and accessories redone. Best of luck for your planning =) and Congrats on getting married.
