Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
are you looking for sweet recipes or other?
What kind of diabetes, are they allowed rice, fruits, dried fruits, honey, synthetic sugar?
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
^I'm looking for recipes for meals but you can post dessert recipes too if you want.
It's for type II diabetic...Her doc told me she can have rice and bread but avoid meetha, red meats and oily food...
I use olive oil(very lil amount) for cooking but her blood sugar level is still not going to normal and I'm worried...I am not sure if she should stop eating white rice n roti too but then what will she eat? :( Please do post recipes that you know would make her go back to normal...thnx

Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
I think when the doctor meant rice and bread is okay, that he probably meant brown rice and wholemeal bread.
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
Shahreen,
That's what I thought and I asked him to clarify if he meant brown rice but he said no it doesn't matter as long as they're eaten in moderation.
I have brought brown rice too but have no clue how to cook them(except make chinese vegetable rice)...They taste too BLAH...I wish I knew how to make them taste good for a desi mom...She gives me the you-expect-me-to-eat-THAT? look whenever I cook them for her! :(
help me guys...
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
Admittedly brown rice does take a bit of getting used to.....and you cook it exactly how you would cook white rice but with slightly longer cooking times (althout it will always retain some 'bite' to the grain)
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
white rice breaks down onto its component sugars very quickly which can cause all kinds of nasty symptoms for the patient.
I'll post some recipe's tomorrow
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
I love brown rice :D
It is much easier to cook brown rice if you have a pressure cooker. I use 1 and 3/4 cups of water for 1 cup of rice and let the cooker "whistle" several times.
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
hmm i think i am gonna try brown rice too, cuz my dads diabetic adn we eat rice ALOT like almost everyday and i am afraid we are gonna end up getting it too…
CA i dont know if u have met my dad or still remember him but hes probably the hardest person to cook for
actually all desi parents are…but have u tried grilling meats and chicken? He seems to like that at times.
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
CA: every since i opened up my eyes, i have seen my father eating meetha religiously. ANd couple of months back, he just went to doctor to have a regular check up for my mom, so he end up checking his sugar. He was schoked that his sugar level is way too much. It was arround 250 +...
from that day he stopped eating all kind of meetha. He started to eat karele(karway walay) with everything.
He also eat 1 grapefruit a day
he eats khali channay, dry fruits specially walnuts and seow(indian nimcos) whenever he is hungry
He doesnt eat carrot, potato and vegetables that have more sugar in it anymore.
He even stop drinking juices.
He does eat rice like twice a week, but rest he eats roti.
He add equal sweetner instead of sugar in chai.
You wont believe it after 2 months, his sugar came down to 120. karele and grapefruit helped him alot.
btw he also took some sugar medicine from GNC that also helped him all the way.
Btw dont have em eat oily, and heavy foods that has cholestrol.
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
How about eating karelay. Just boil 2-3 Kareelay in 2 cup of water and then put them in grinder along with water add salt to taste and drink it.
Very good juice for that purpose.
Otherwise cook them alone or with Qeema and eat it frequently.
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
ewwww karela ka juice
did u ever try???
yeah karele bhindi, karele ghosh, karele qeema would be a great dish… or just plain kareli ki sazi woudl also work..

Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
ohh yes.. also cook food for her in olive oil... tell me if you mom is eatin any medicine.. i asked my father about his exact sugar level and at that time it was arround 325... mann that was too much.... but he takes medicine too.... did your doctor recommend any medicine to her?
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
PP007…325???
that’s like really really HIGH…My mom’s blood sugar level is usually under 200 when it’s high…She has been taking Metformin glucophage tablets ever since she was diagnosed for diabetes. It’s a good med if the patient needs to lose weight too which is the case with a lot of diabetics. What meds does your dad take?
Does your dad keep a diary? My mom’s doc said she needs to check her sugar everyday and keep a diary for records.
Yeah, we use olive oil for cooking now…sometimes I mix it with corn oil for dishes in which more oil is needed.
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
PP007 Yes I was drinking it when I was about 7 - 9 years old and once in a month I was given to us by our grandfather who makes it for himself but also added a little suger in it.
CA Kiya sugar khatam karney key liey abb Rass Gulley Khaoo Gee.
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
Hi guys,
my mom's condition is WORSE than ever...she looks so tired and sleepy, does not feel like talking to anybody...her food intake has gone down ALOT since last week....I don't know what's going on inside her since I'm working fulltime...Can somebody explain what could be the reason??:( She doesn't wanna take care of herself and she doesn't want to go to the doc either. Kia karoon??? Should i force her, physically? but how...
Please suggest desi meal recipes for diabetics. thanks so much!
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
i hope somebody can help me...
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
CA, i suggest you take her to the doc ASAP. My ammi has diabetes as well and she has to really take care of herself. Tell her that you need to see the doc for something and take her with you. THen suggest that since she is there, she should see the doc as well. Let me know if you need help with anything at all. I have met your mom at Devon several times and i think she is awesome so let me know if i can help with anything at all. ![]()
Re: Desi Food Recipes for Diabetics
CA force her if you have to. Talk to her, ban all sugary stuff from house. We hardly buy mithaiyan that my dad likes unless we make it ourselves with splenda. You HAVE to take her to a doc and moniter her glucose level.
