Desi Concepts

There are some kind of sweet n cute desi concepts n some things that desi parents say to their kids etc

I’ll start with some here:

-) Jhoota khanay se pyaar barhta hae [If you eat from the same spoon or drink from the same glass it increases love]

-) Often when kids offer candy to their parents, the parents are like, tum khao hamaray payt mein jayay ga. [You eat it and it’ll go into our stomach]

What are some other ones you guys got?

-paison ka kalak se dollat barta hai (some old dude told me that while we were collecting charity for eid)

Raat ke waqt jharoo nahi maara karo. Ghar se bharkat chalay jaati hai.

(The crappiest piece of advice my parents ever gave me)

paRho gay likho gay bano gay nawab
khailo gay koodo gay, hoa gay kharaab.

possibly the worst piece of advice elders give young ones.. success in life has little to do with a formal education.

probably the worst one i heard frommy parents....

fajar ki namaz ke baad sona nahoosat hai

  • Aik chup hazaar ko haraati hay :~)

unfortunately i have never come across any such hadeeth....
yes nahoosat is far-fetched, but even then i never read any hadith stating it as a wrong or even a disliked act to sleep after fajar prayer....

if u do know of any, plz let me know....
cuz it wud be good to let my dad know that after all these years of debate, i finally learnt that he was right in this matter....

  • raat ke waqt baal khoolna nehas hoota hai.

dont know where that comes from.

It makes sense according to those times since people were not holding office jobs. They had to go out and go about with their trade or whatever their means of living was. Obviously the earlier they got out of the house the longer their work day would be and the more they would earn(most likely). Now with some people working a graveyard shift, that saying certainly doesn't apply!!! :D

well some of the crap I have heard from my mom is..

-No nail cutting after maghrib.

-No sleeping on ur back.. else satan will dance all over u.

-don't ever run in circles around a person..for some reason I don't remember.

  • dont walk under the ladder
  • dont walk infront of the person who is sweeping with a jharoo or something
  • dont let the shoe stay turned upside down on the floor

and a few others, il post when i remember.

don't pee and crap at the same time.

PCG, the saying on not to use jhaaRRoo at night seems like a man-made thing. Men didn't like their women sweeping floors after they got home from work. So, they wanted to make sure it's all done during the day. Also, it is in conflict with the teachings of Islam which puts cleanliness next to Godliness.

are you a Christian or so? :D

Most of these sayings have some sort of logical explanation to them or if you want to you can reason them out.

there's a Muslim comic who comments on this:
when adults say, don't leave the janamaz out, warna shaitan uspe namaz parlega.

(the comic then says: hey, let him pray. if there's anyone who needs to pray, it's shaitaan!)

Makes perfect sense. You should either run to or away from the person, never in circles around him/her :D

irem, I thought this thread was about cute and sweet sayings, although everyone here is mentioning ones that weren't sweet or cute to them. hehe.

My dad says, "Ammi ke baghair khana nahin kha sakta houN." And while he is saying it, he is taking a nivala of food while she is in the kitchen. hehe. If we ask how can he be eating while she is in kitchen he will say, "Dono ke liye kha raha houN." hehe

I don't know who said this, maybe my mum or daadi or someone...you shouldnt sit half in sunshine and half in shade.

And you shouldnt move your legs/feet while sitting.

I have more-

  • if two people say the same thing together both are bound to eat something sweet that same day.

  • if a spider runs over ur clothes.. you will get a new pair soon.

-don't step on a jharoo.. barkat etc is lost.

-keep doors open at maghrib.. good angels enter home and bad ones leave. (pffft!)

I used to pretend to talk to my imaginary friend while I was little.. my mom used to freak out.. and told me someday a "buri rooh" might really become my friend. She said.. pretending to talk to someone.. or inviting such imaginary ppl is like an open invitation to satan and it's allies.
