PCG, the saying on not to use jhaaRRoo at night seems like a man-made thing. Men didn't like their women sweeping floors after they got home from work. So, they wanted to make sure it's all done during the day. Also, it is in conflict with the teachings of Islam which puts cleanliness next to Godliness.

PCG , funguy well i think its more to do with Hazart Zainab's (AS)swept the Karbala filed the night before the Battle started. So i think because of painful history its not considered good.
well my dad sometimes puts a black till like on me so that mujhe nazar nahi lagge well in a way its cute cuz u know he thinks i look pretty, and i let him do it..but i think its absolutely ridiculous cuz how can a black dot save u from an evil eye?? if anything can, its Allah..and thats wat pisses me off about most of these concepts
sorry for the late reply; I was trying to find the correct references for what I have.. still i could only find two references even though I remember reading more than two, long time ago… anyway, here is what I could collect
The Prophet Muhammad :saw: has prohibited sleeping just after fajr prayers prior to sunrise and has called it a source of poverty* (Ibn Maja). *
Once, upon seeing Fatimah:razi2: sleeping just after fajr, he:saw: woke her up and told her never to sleep at that time

I usually have a quarrel with anyone who tries to give me a knife or scissors with the pointed end towards me, and it normally starts with "Do you realise how dangerous giving it to me like that is to me?"
most of these things are common sense, but it’s funny, the stories parents concoct to make their kids do things the proper way.
and i’ve heard another one about jharoo… someone (don’t remember who) told me ke jharoos should always be made to stand with the brush side down… varna ghar mein laraaieyaan hoti hain. also i’ve heard that you shud not open an umbrella within the house.
oh, i’ve also heard ke when someone is leaving the house, never ask them where they are going, otherwise they will not be successful in their work. i guess this one was made up so that i would shut up and not ask so many questions
