Desi Conception Myth

Have you ever heard something like this?

So and so is having a daughter because they didn’t wait to do “it” on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the Chand (moon).

So according to this desi myth, the couple did “it” before or after the 13th, 14th, and 15th and hence are having a girl.

If they had waited and only did “it” during the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the Chand then they would have had a boy.

This thinking is just absurd. :smack:

Re: Desi Conception Myth

LOL thank you for this laugh.

by the way, people do and and can try the gender of their choice based on ovulation days so may be their cycle is parallel to chand days

Re: Desi Conception Myth

who is gonna decide the correct lunar date? they have problem with months [2 Eids], let alone 12 months of the year.

Re: Desi Conception Myth

I recently heard some myths related to breastfeeding.

  • baby will catch cold/cough if mother eats something cold

  • baby will catch cold/cough if mother showers everyday

  • baby will catch cold/cold if mother breastfeeds right after taking shower

There were other myths that group of mothers strongly believed in, however when I confronted them about the three listed above, they decided not to share rest with me. They just said their babies are colicky…and I said to myself shut up lusi!..lol

Re: Desi Conception Myth

Not just absurd, bit rather gross and awkward. How do people actually bring themselves to speculate, let alone discuss, other people’s sex lives and when they did “it?” :smack:

Re: Desi Conception Myth

i’ve heard a few too:

-the baby would have been gorii/goraa if the expecting mother drank enough milk during pregnancy! :hehe:

-preggos should not venture out during lunar/solar eclipse or else the baby will have a birth-mark anywhere on his/her body :hehe:

-pregnant women must not let the shadow of a widow/barren woman [baanjh aurat]/divorced woman cast on her or else she might lose her baby

the last one is pretty cruel. :frowning:

Re: Desi Conception Myth

Hahaha I was thinking the same thing

Re: Desi Conception Myth

I haven’t gone through that thread lusi so I don’t know what must be going on there however the above mentioned points (that YOU mentioned) are not myths but scientific facts. The baby is likely to catch the cold becauseof mom’s body temperature… its as same as when a mother eats something, she transfers it to her child through her milk. Hope it makes sense

Re: Desi Conception Myth

It is not a thread but something i heard at an iftar party. I was told by the doc to take warm shower before bf, especially during the 1st month.
I took shower before bf all the time and i was living in eskimo land at that time.
Can you please site any authentic research. Yes, you should be careful about eating but to be very honest Desi women stop eating stuff good for them.
Heck my hubby made haleem when my son was 2 weeks old, my mother and mil almost had a heart attack…lol
My son was fine alhamdulilah.

Re: Desi Conception Myth

The one i heard dont remember exactly is about tummy shape during pregnancy telling boy or girl according to tummy shape.

Re: Desi Conception Myth

These are just old wives tales

Re: Desi Conception Myth

This is Bongi …

Re: Desi Conception Myth

i just heard one today…my Bhabhi’s mom said if a pregnant woman feels pain in the lower back it means she is gonna have a BOY! :hehe:

Re: Desi Conception Myth

For a single guy, you sure know a lot about conception and its myths…

Re: Desi Conception Myth

er, no. unless she’s eating a bucket of ice chips before each feed, she’s not going to be lowering her body temperature to the extent that its going to affect her baby

showering every day is just being clean and hygienic, for crying out loud! i would think an unwashed mother would be more likely to transmit germs to her kid. as for showering before feeding, that’s purely personal preference.

come on. we all know better!

as for the cycle thing- what i’ve heard is that boy sperm tend to be quicker but die out faster, while female sperm swim slower but live longer. so according to this info, if you have sex closer to your ovulation date, you’ll likely conceive a boy since the boy sperm will get to the egg quicker. if you have sex a few days before your ovulation, then it’ll be a girl because the boy sperm will mostly be dead by the time ovulation occurs and it’ll be the slower-swimming, hardier girl sperm that’ll make it to the egg on time. having said that, predicting your exact date of ovulation is almost impossible. all the ovulation tests do is tell you it is approaching but not exactly when, so yeah. take it with a grain of salt!

Re: Desi Conception Myth

Not to mention that a cold, even in adults, is not caused by literally being cold or going out into the cold. The common cold is a viral upper respiratory tract infection caused by different types of viruses.

Re: Desi Conception Myth

Sadly I have heard quiet a few myself. My own MIL advised me to drink litters of milk to have a ‘gora bacha’ and milk apparently keeps the skin clean. Ya sure with all the hormones in milk nowadays thats quiet the opposite for me my dear lady :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Desi Conception Myth

Friend was told by her mom to avoid dark foods (I forget which one exactly), otherwise the baby would come out sanwla. She’s like, my entire husband’s family is sanwali, the baby would most certainly turn out sanwlal :vivo:
