Yeah I’m on a roll and I am not ANTI desi…just sharing some thoughts given I’m an FOB myself so don’t bash me.
But have you all noticed the desi version of birthday parties for the kids? Invite a whole bunch of uncles and aunties and prepare a huge feast of paye and niharis, biryanis and qormas, with a few boxes of pizza tucked in somewhere between the hot flaming trays and a cheap cake from Costco…
And while the aunties and uncles gossip away to glory, the bechara birthday kid is busy getting her/his fancy clothes torn apart or cake shoved at his hair. No method to the madness. And oh, just pin the tail on the donkey.
Don’t tell me you did this for your child. It was an excuse to have an adult get together because you had to return some dawat invites or just collect some gifts Don’t lie, oh desi brother or sister. !
So what really made that kid happy on their birthday?
well, most kiddies have their first bday party at 1yrs old, now they dont have a bunch of friends they can invite obv, and neither do they understand yet, that its a party..so its just an excuse to have a get together and have some fun....i have been to my gori friends daughters bday, and it was the same as ours excpet ours finishes alot later, theres are set timings, from 2 to 6pm and then they kick u out, we however, dont give times at all..and stay until sunrise....
also gorey have alot less food than we do..we serve the entire range from starters to desserts, to snacks to goody bags....my friend just had a few lil snacks like crisps and sandwhcies....
EITHER WAY
the best thing is the video. u have that forever. its a must. my parents did all our parties at 1 yr old, but my nana passed away when my youngest brother was a year old so they didnt do a party...they did it when h was 4. so now ( AT 13) he says how come you lot didnt do my 1 yr old one, and he sulks thinking no one loved him enough/bothered to do it.....so the video is all about the kid, and the kid will enjoy it for years to come...
I’m quite old now and trust me, I’ve never asked my parents what they did for my 1st birthday. And if I wanted to know, I’d really not care about the aunties and uncles but that my dad and mom and sisters and brothers help me cut my first cake . I think a simple family get together should suffice, no?
yes but u do realize that msot desi families are 1023819287312 people, right?
I dn’t think there’s anything wrong with a “typical” desi party, and there’s nothing wrong with a non-typical desi party or not having a party at all…
though I saw pix of a million dollar aqiqa…now thats just crazy!
I have done both parties kids only at a kids entertainment place like Chucke Cheese etc.and at home with all people. A lot of desis now opt for kids parties only as it is cheaper. My son wants a party at home with parents as he quotes. I try out new bakeries though not Costco, Sam'setc.
As much as I enjoy birthday parties, I refuse to have one for our kids.. we don't have kids yet but I have a feeling we will keep them family only parties especially if they are young.. once older if they want to have friends around then I like njgal's idea of parties with kids theme!!
Oh this sounds like the typical BD party....!!
I plan on having a 1st BD party IA soon enough for my beloved one...it is more for me than for her...but me wants to have it...!!
I dont think so I will want to have any more till they are old enough to have their friends over etc or to decide whatever they wanna do ....it was teh same way for us when growing up...
It does seem that most do have a really huge 1st birthday, and it is really cool to watch. I love watching my 1st birthday video. Most parents invite all the aunts & uncles over until the child goes to nursery/school and then has their own friends to invite.
I’ve been to lots of desi birthday parties like the one you described, particularly first birthday parties.
I was reluctant to do the same, but I really wanted to include as many people as possible, and since we hadn’t done an akika, I felt it should be something that everyone can enjoy, desi-style. Her party was just a few weeks ago. Anyway, we got a few dishes from outside, and then I made some, Ammi made some, and MIL made some. We also got a cake from a bakery that turned out to be DELICIOUS!! I was a little worried cuz I didn’t get a chance to try it out, but people said it was melt in your mouth amazing (yellow cake with one layer of white chocolate mousse and one layer of raspberry mousse). We held it at a local community center nearby, as I felt our home would be too crowded. Hubby really didn’t want to do anything big and formal, but I wanted to do something proper that would allow us to include our close family and friends. We kept it all desi (almost all local relatives, plus a few very close family friends and some relatives from out of town).
Still about 150 people were invited, about 100 were realistic attendees, but weather cut the guest list down further (thank goodness cuz technically the hall was only for 80 :halo: ).
I did a few games for kids, but due to a recent death in the family, I did not feel right doing all the dancing/music-related games. The party was “winter wonderland themed” and so we did a few games and activities and decor that related to that. The hall also allowed the kids plenty of space to entertain themselves, so it was a good choice.
We kept it at lunchtime, so that Bunny could enjoy herself and she had a ball being passed around and admired!
^^That sounds lovely and the cake looks yummy…
My daughter’s 1st is 3 months from now IA and I am planning it all in my head(well I have been doing that for 9 months now..:D)
I still dont have anything finalized but lets see what I eventually end up with..one thing is for sure…I dont wanna be doing any cooking…!!
