"Desi" , A very Confusing Word for me

This word I have heard on many occassions some of them i am refering here
in National Songs , mera Des… (My country) , clear here means Watan and meanings are positive.

Once My freind was commenting about one Electronic appliance , he told it is “Desi Shey” , he was terming the quality not good, I thought , oh it is Desi (local manufactured) that is why he is saying “Desi Shey” , and many times later on I heard this word in refering one thing as second quality of some item, so in Negative meanings.

One day I was buying some sweets I think it was Hulwa or Gulab Jamon from one bakery , the sales person was praising his product , saying that , we have baked this in Desi Ghee , Oh then it should be not good quality when he has backed it in Desi Ghee… But why he would point to some bad quality? , Desi Ghee is expensive and quality Ghee … but the word Desi …

Then Came on GS forums , in Many forums on many threads and in many replies I have read this word
Some times I would say , it refers to Second Quality other time I would say no it refers to First Quality…

It is really confusing me
and my confusion increases exponentially when it goes for humain behavours quality …

What is the exact meaning of “Desi” here or some where else ? I have no clear idea , hope you have.

Re: "Desi" , A very Confusing Word for me

desi mean anything that refers to our ethnicity...i suppose.

Re: “Desi” , A very Confusing Word for me

Desi means Pure and Original and you know these two characteristics are first quality :k:

@Hashmat any Example of such Use

@FT , Ya right , but DES(Desh in Hindi) is the same word ?

^ confused desi

^ :hehe:

Hope GS omits the Confusion

Re: "Desi" , A very Confusing Word for me

I think desi refers to anything that is from back in the home country, including us people. It isn't a negative term.

American Desi

in pakistan, desi means local
for indians it has a bit different meaning. The word is originally from Sanskrit, literally meaning from the country or of the country.
same same lol

now, it is our own cultural thing that we dont trust our local products and when we use the word desi for some products, at many occasions they are considered to be of low quality. But in few cases local products beat foreign products in quality and price. Like FT mentioned desi ghee. Other than that leather jackets, fans, knives and rice etc. are the products with which if you put the word desi, it symbolize them as good quality products.

^ :k:

What about “GS people use of this word”?

@asif

cannot watch your posted vedio Office time , will see later

desi is from des (or desh in hindi= country) and refers to subcontinentals. It is not an offensive word at all.

Everyone knows that desi ghee is more khalis or pure (and probably more fattening :D) than say dalda ghee

Re: "Desi" , A very Confusing Word for me

I would rather be called Afghan over desi anyday.

Re: "Desi" , A very Confusing Word for me

shouldn't you be afghan-one then? :)

Re: "Desi" , A very Confusing Word for me

^ kyun bhai, pak-one naam rakha hai aur ooper se deengey.

Desi isnt a negative term. It can mean indian/pakistani/bengali people. And it also means original/authentic.
You will also hear people say in pakistan referring to free range chickens as 'Desi murghi'.
Theres also a patriotic song 'Yeg Des hamara hai, issey hum ne sanwaara hai, is ka ek ek zara humey jaaan se piyara hai, yeh Des, yeh Des'. youtube it.

Re: "Desi" , A very Confusing Word for me

Re: “Desi” , A very Confusing Word for me

I only use the word “desi” to describe “aapne laug” on GS… in real life, i use the word “Asian”… but i know i can’t use that on GS cos that would cause confusion with the Yanks, as they use that word Asian to describe Chinese/Japanese people…

And i’ve never thought of the word desi as being offensive… :hmmm:

Lol, thats true and sad at the same time.

Hope others think like you.

Me too, ‘Asian’ tends to confuse ppl online..
