i dont see any problem in referring to someone as yaar.
but i would not say 'he or she is my yaar'......i would rather use dost, friend.
the word is derogatory if a girl says 'that boy is my yaar' or if a boy says 'that girl is my yaar'. even though they mean it in terms of friends but people assume boyfriend/girlfriend thing.
